Jon's G40

Featured Replies

New thread as the old one went bye bye :-(

When i got it a year and abit ago, it looked like this................

G40-1.jpg

07022008197.jpg

SPEC:-

1272cc PY engine

Full blend charger

65mm pulley

GT inlet manifold

induction kit & heatshield

63mm system from end of decat pipe to backbox with upswept letterbox outlet

chip

RR @ 137bhp.

Ran sweet as a nut and left my mate in his golf TDI (130bhp) waaaaaay behind!

Didnt do much to it for a while except drive it like i stole it!

As i liked how it looked, i only made two changes, swapping the side repeaters for some clear items and pressed metal plates. I also had a supercharged badge laying around so that went on as well. Brought some tinted headlights soon after which replaced the standard jobbies.

Since then, not much on the outside has changed. I decided that i could do with abit more power and after receiving compensation money from royal fail, i began spending it. Brought alot of bits from Gofaster100 (James) which should hopefully up the power abit.

After £5k and alot of arseache............

ENGINE NOW:-

PY engine with 1341 bottom end (accralite pistons)

PSD Eaton kit

PSD toothed belt kit

GT inlet

AWT FMIC

Custom made boost pipes

300cc injectors

chip

oil cooler

chrome looking throttlebody (standard for now ;))

PSD 4-2-1 manifold heat wrapped

Still afew lil niggles to work out so no idea on power output as of yet but fingers crossed that i can get it working and remapped before the G40 RR day in October.

On the inside, the interior has been stripped out to be replaced with 2 magnum motorsport fibreglass bucket seats and 4-point harnesses. A rear strutbrace is inplace, ready to be secured with a strutbrace up front ready to go on.

FUTURE PLANS:-

As like everyone, i doubt the spending will ever end! to complement the engine work, a BVH and aquamist will soon find their way into the engine bay, along with the throttlebody bored out to 51mm and dewedged. A nitrous system of some shape or form maybe added at a later date?

For the interior, a rollcage would be dandy, with some carbon fibre bits here and there. If i cant find any to buy, i might have a go at making some myself.

On the outside, a new set of wheels and a new set of side repeaters as the ones i brought went AWOL!?

Thats it for now i suppose.

cheers for looking

Jon.

Good to see you haven't lost dedication mate..

Fingers crossed you'll see it running at the RR day.

I may have to admit defeat and rock up in the mk4 yet. All depends if i can get it remapped and MOT'd in time. Cutting it close, thats for sure and theres still a major little niggle i need to sort.

Still needs mapping eh?

Not sure of the price but have you considered a standalone ECU?

Good to see you still have it, any thoughts on different suspension?

ooooo, love the eaton big smiles!

did u get it RR after the charger was changed?

Tbh, i have no idea when it comes to engines in general, let alone fine tuning them. Maybe an option though if i can find someone who'll teach me how to work it!

Did think about a H&R kit although i'm not sure how well the G60s would sit in the arches when its lowered. The roads round here are pretty bouncy too so just having the suspension stiffened would do me. I did forget to add that i'll be buying a subframe shortly too ;)

It hasnt been running right since i got it back so not had a chance yet to get a RR figure :-(

Glad to see your still around.

You planing to get a subframe from Volksnorm or somewhere else? (its the next thing on my list too)

The things that make us weak can also make us stronger......

(or something like that!)

Anyway....

Quite tempted by a PPS subframe as i dont fancy having to take the exhaust off to put the frame on. DOnt think theres much difference between the two different brands though.

I dont know how universal ECU's are between different cars and brands.. but in terms of certain Jap hot hatches..

Some standard ECU's cant be remapped, so the options are a Piggyback ECU that connects to the standard one, which is premapped to suit the car..

Then a standalone, which as far as i know will need custom mapping and an RR session, but it allows every aspect of the engine to be controlled, ie. fuelling, ignition etc (car dependant) and a fully custom map to be setup..

I've seen piggybacks go for a few hundred quid, and the well-known Greddy eManage standalone go for about £500, mapping, wiring and RR tuning can add a few hundred to that but it's like having a custom made brain... no idea if it will be the same for the G though, I'm talking only in terms of turbo Jap stuff where everything is electronic..

I know Georgio has Emerald on his eaton G. What benefits it has over a remapped standard ECU though I don't know. Once I have the cash to consider it, I'll talk to the PPP boys.

Need to get onto Jabba to see what the wait will be for a remap slot.

Have to find out why the cambelt doesn't sit central on the camshaft pulley 1st though ???

Emerald's useful if you want to use the extra features it offers - e.g. I'm using its switchable maps feature and electronic boost control on mine. Ultimately I'd like to switch to using a crank position sensor and toothed crank pulley to get a more accurate engine speed signal for spot-on fuel and ignition control too, but whether it'd gain me any power is debatable!

G40 Digifant is pretty damn good for supercharged applications (and even turbo'd if you make the right tweaks) - and is much cheaper than going standalone. You can also go to switchable maps with Digifant with a few neat mods too. ;)

What does a switchable map involve?

1x road atlas

1x rocker switch

1x road atlas

1x rocker switch

Bloody comedians

nice too see your still around mate...shame about the car, you really dont wanna be rocking up to a G40 RR day in the mk4 lol

could be worse mate!!!

What does a switchable map involve?

In the case of Emerald you can store 3 different maps in the ECU, and wire up a switch to flick between them. If you've got electronic boost control like I have it means you can have one low boost map, a 'normal' boost map, and a high boost map - and swap between them whenever you like!

The stuff I've got for Digifant gives you the option of 2 maps - perhaps the second one could be used for a 95RON fuel map, a map with less ignition timing to use if your Aquamist is empty, or a silly map with lots of fuel and a low rev limiter for flames fun. You get the idea, lol!

flames........Hmmmmmmmm.

Thanks Andy. Gives me something to think about

i also need emerald in my life, fecking mega bucks tho =[

cars looking good dude, shame to hear about all that happened, phil would be the last person i would get to do any work on my car!

but glad you got it back and your not selling it anymore

love live zee gee

£500+ just aint spare at the mo :-) Would be ace though Saf.

I need to get outside and wash & polish her as it hasnt been done for an age.

Been outside today playing with the brakes once again. rear cylinders/shoes look mine, load adjuster adjusted to allow for no weight over rear axle but still no joy. Will bleed them when i get time. If not, i think the servos goosed!

On the engine front, the car seems to play the constant strange revving song! Will idle round 1000rpm for 2mins and then strangely rev upto 1500/1800rpm for 2/3 seconds and then the revs will drop back to 1000rpm.

Get the Eaton to play the National Anthem

You can get launch control on some of the ECU's too :)

It just seems strange how it idles!

Hopefully getting it remapped etc will sort it out.

Very tempting to spend the cash. Maybe once all the other stuff is sorted otherwise the shopping list will never end!

Looks like an epic car mate, pretty much how I'd have one.

Black

Supercharged

Clean

Only things I'd do on that is add some team dynamics alloys.

OMP Seats

OMP Corsica 2 Steering Wheel

Flame Kit :p

about £200 i think  the PPS one is about £330 and is a full wishbone conversion, PPP one is £515 for the full wishbone conversion (£215 for stage2, subframe using ARB). plus the pps one means you dont need to dismantle the exhaust, (something i cant do easily)

Due for a wash & polish this weekend if it doesn't rain.

I do have a set (well 3 - smashed one :-() of team dynamics prorace 2 alloys in black. Very tempted to get them wrapped in new rubber and put on. Dont know if it would be too much black though? Inside, theres a pair of Magnum motorsport bucket seats made from fibreglass (quite light ;)), an Momo steering wheel and after seeing it on the RR at Aldon last year, it doesn't need a flamer kit!
