Jon's G40

Featured Replies

Pics are coming (eventually )

Picked up some new bleed nipples today (£19.61 worth!) so i should be able to get the brakes done this weekend :)

Ordered some new eaton specific oil so that should be with me either tomorrow or monday and then the charger can go back together on re-installed. Gotta pop into town tomorrow so i can pick up some jubilee clips to finish off the air intake.

Its getting there :)

What an arseache it is to buy some large jubilee clips round here :(

managed to find some eventually after looking in 5 different places! Alot cheaper than eBay too ;)

Eaton oil also turned up this morning so I'll try and get some pics of various stages of re-installation.

Whoops, wrong account

good work, keep it up :)

Jon.... also know as Rach at the weekend :?

Haha, was adding bits to freecycle on Rachs account and forgot to switch back!

Added the oil to the charger but not knowing how much was left in it, I think 250ml may have been too much! Got to fiddle around with it some more to get the pulley etc back on but as I had a banging hangover, I've left it to do tomorrow!!!

Aaaarrrgghh, managed to get the pulley back on after i'd topped up the oil and now I've realised I've left a washer out so time to rip the pulley back off the charger again :( May need a drop more oil in too as it still sounds abit rough when the rotors turn. So hard to judge how much oils in it tho.

Had a chap at the door earlier asking if the car was for sale!? Dont know if i should be worried now incase someone tries to take it (it wont start and it definately wouldnt get far!). Back to the age old dilemma again. do i sell up, buy another G and just leave it alone or do i fix this one and get it running right? (if thats possible?)

might be making a dodgy noise because of the missing washer.

pour the oil into a mixing jug and measure out exactly what you need, should help you pour it in without spillng any

dont sell up boyo, youve come too far!

and just take the battery out, or home brew immobilse it, cut key wires in random locations, you can get switches with removable keys.

guy look dodge? old or young?

remove fuel pump relay!

i used to do that, but its so easy just to bridge it with a short bit of wire as i used to when i was testing the injectors, all be it with a switch and in-line fuse.

when we swapped the coupe for the mk1, the guy said the fuel pumps dodgy, karl had to have a precarious wire dangling from the bottom of the seats into a maze of a fusebox which had a tendency to spark when you hit bumps. absolute nutter!

I can't believe I left it out tbh, was sat right infront of me when I was putting the pulley on :(

From the directions I found, the charger needs around 6 fl oz of oil - 4 for the nosecone and 2 for the rest of the charger but as a PSD charger doesn't have a nosecone, I'm sure it would need more than that? I put 250ml in (£30 a bottle!!) and have a tiny bit left over so may bung it back in again.

Batterys flat and there's less than £5 of fuel in it and anyway, I could easily catch it in the mk4! brought a toad immobiliser off eBay yesterday so as soon as that appears it's being wired in.

Chap was young. Apparently I raced him once when he was driving a 106 gti (like I'd remember wasting everyone  ) did check on the car once he'd left to make sure they hadn't tried to get in.

Good to see your getting somewhere with your G40 anyway Jon haha.

Mine is still engineless :( getting a bit depressing now.

mines not run properly for quite a while :( hopefully i can get the charger sorted and put back on soon.

No Engine? was it proper fooked?

Well it melted piston 3 and scored the block, needed a new block and piston.

Had to take it out, Ross(13kpologt) rebuilt it for me, its just sitting in my shed waiting to be put into the car.

Ouch! Welcome to the melted piston club

Bet you don't have a melted piston trophy though :-p

Hahaha, no (unless there's something I'm not aware of!)

You need a melted piston trophy in your life:

Tiz a cool trophy, just dont fancy making my own just yet (1341 pistons arent cheap :( )

Hopefully my immobiliser turns up tomorrow so i can get installation underway and keep my insurers happy. Will have to clear some shite out of the car as its full of tools etc from when i worked on it last.

My immobiliser turned up :) I'd be outside today fitting it but it's bloody snowing again :(

Since I'm too damn lazy to get cold re-installing the charger, i've been putting some of my time to good use

Decided that there really should be a plate over the end of the charger underneath the inlet. As the plate i was given is too thick and wont fit (manifolds in the way iirc), I'm cutting a matching plate out of 2mm twill carbon fibre. Not exactly sure how long it will last with the high under bonnet temperatures but I'm sure i'll find out.

Going to order some more carbon sheet next week for afew other bits n bobs that I've been busy working on. Not sure how they're going to turn out but you dont know till you try. Afew custom pieces coming soon.......................

finally some decent weather :)

Managed to get the charger back in place minus one bolt which will be sorted later when i pick a new one up and the air feed & filters in place. Batterys also charged and the ECU is back in so progress at last.

Will post some pics up when i figure out how to get them off my phone onto the computer ;)

Heres the pics...............

air filter, headlight and indicator back on....

All complete :)

seems as i had a spare bit of time today, time for more fiddling!

Got confused and annoyed trying to change the lambda probe (couldnt release the plug and it looks as though the bolt on the lambdas been mangled :( ) so i changed the blue temp sensor instead. Let it idle upto temperature and it didnt stall :) The revs jump about still though between 1000 and 1250rpm and sometimes abit higher (1800rpm) but with a quick blip of the throttle, they drop down again.

reluctant to adjust the screw on the TB as it sounds like its almost about to stall when the revs hit 1000rpm but it doesnt.

Just need to bleed the brakes now so its ready to fail a MOT.

ISV is now cleaned out. Surprised how much blank yak i washed out of it! Was a total pain in the arse to get back on though. £rd time lucky so now its back on and working. Need to get a new terminal for one of the wires that plug into the back of the head as the wire was joined to the connector by 1 strand.

Began to bleed the brakes. Seems the new bleed nipples i brought are slightly too small to screw into the back of the hub and i wrecked a cylinder in the process so i've gotta change the drivers side rear cylinder now before the bleeding process can resume.

I also managed to trace the source of the steam to the boost pipe coming off the intercooler so its either a dodgy connection (does look abit suspect!), cracked intercooler or faulty radiator. Once i get afew bits stripped back off the front of the car i can investigate further and try to fix it.

The interior also needs attention as its a right mess :( the hoovers gonna get some right abuse but hopefully it should better afterwards.
