His electrics were forever going on the blink especially when it rained

and living in Scotland it rains more than it's dry....few and far between

Insurance runs out at xmas, Quinn want 1450 to renew it, thats 150 discount

I wanted a Glanza but done think i can insure one as no-one has then listed..

If i get the older version Starlet Turbo it'd be a bit pointless to get a Glanza after it, as it's 90% the same car..

So I've been getting (good) quotes for anything fast, and I've always loved the old turbo cult cars..

R5 GTT's and S2 RST's, i can afford and insure next yearm and there are some lovely standard examples on the the Owners Clubs.. It's just choosing one..

I've heard about the R5's being poorly built but there are 90k+ totally original ones still running, rust free...

Decisions......

depends how much you need to use them. daily, could be a nighmare. could get lucky and find one that is reliable. the same for any old car really. r5 turbs are an absolute hoot to drive though

25 minute drive to and from work on weekdays (traffic is half the drive)..

Then if i need to go anywhere else...... i dont go out driving on the nights much anyway..

If it breaks it breaks I've just always loved them.. plus i could always sell and swap the insurance, hmm..

its the traffic id be worried about. cooling was thier weak point.

Either of the cars you mention are going to give you some headaches maintenance wise at some point. Especially if you tune them at all. R5GTT's are renowned headgasket killers when running extra boost and don't get into thinking that French parts are cheap, because they are far from it. (I work for Nissan/Renault so I see the prices of stuff). Escort Turbos are prone to rust through-out the body and I know of loads that have been scrapped because the chassis' are no good anymore. Besides, the series 1 is the one you want.

They are notorious for catching fire IIRC, its some dodgey fan on top of the engine that likes to short its self. Most people take it off.

I used to have one as a track car and they are awesome to drive. Really goooood fun. Only they have some cooling issues. If was gonna get one for the road I would switch strait to an aluminium radiator as that offers about 30% more cooling than a standard one. They handle pretty good aswell like most french cars. Paint it yellow with a blue interior and you half way to ali g.

How old are you? I'm guessing your about 19-20, right? I'd say leave Quinn as that renewal price is ghey, could easily get it down to 900-1000 with other companies. Anywho my brother owned a minter s2 scrote when I say minter I mean bodywork wise, no rust, underneath was clean as, lifted carpet and no signs anywhere, problem is it had constant problems in the 1 year he owned it, new gearbox, 2 alternators, new rad, new plugs pretty much every month and it had a tendancy to cut out in the most awkward places all that apart though it sounded mint and was a hoot to drive, tbh I see them as a weekend car, not to be used as a daily if possible. He paid 2500 for his.

I'm 19 and payed 1400 mods delcaired on a 205 gti 1.9, 130bhp stock then it had full stainless system inc mani, bilstein shocks etc fooking quick, more reliable then a r5gtt and probly abit quicker, yes i see were your coming from wanted a turbo'd car but if you need a reliable daily id get a 205, but still build quality was terrible

My mate had a Raider and quite frankly they're not that quick until you start breaking the 180bhp mark... then you have a lot of issues!!!! The carb is on the wrong side of the engine so thay suffer from running lean due to fuel shortage!

I had a S2 RST on cossie wheels, i had it for 4 weeks!!!! Done my head in... one thing after another went wrong with it! It was running silly power and was running about 26psi so it was fast but not my cup of tea.

Dub to Renault or old Ford would feel like a massive step back in terms of quality... trust me i've done both!!!!

Insurance companies don't list Glanza's as they're imports... How old are you? I'd be suprised if you couldn't insure one.

If you can insure a RST or GTT what about a Cupra? Dunno what your budget is but you'd pick up a decent Cupra for similar money to a decent condition S2.

If you're wanting cheap fast fun what about a GOOD 106 GTI??? I had one, and it gave me no issues at all apart from having to get the gearbox rebuilt... but that was it.

Or a 172 clio??? The old skool 80's / 90's turbo's are very very un reliable now...
