Hey Everyone,

I'm 20...have and love my little 1.0 litre polo, but also have a passion for rallycross and rally style cars. Ideally, I'd like to be able to keep my polo for 4 and a half more years till I'm 25, when my insurance drops and giving me enough time to sort myself out save up some money. I want to be realistic, so I'm not looking to spend money on the newest car I can get...I want something I can be proud of yet still have enough money spare to modify and work on. I'd like to use it as an everyday car on the road, but also be able to use it for track days. I've concluded, I'll be looking at a used classic rally car...remember this will be 5 years on, so recently built sports productions may have dropped enough in price.

Obviously, I like imprezas and evos...but what other classics and different models are out there than would give me what I want?

What would you buy if you had the chance?

Any photos and opinions would be greatly appreciated,

Are they produced as a rally car with the roll cage and no back seats? Looks wicked, but like I said...doubt I'd have enough money to own a car like this as well as an everday car. Who knows...but is there anything out there I could use everyday too?

It's tricky...finding the power and style of a rally car yet wanting to use it everyday...thats where evos and imprezas are quite good. Just need something similar, that has that sort of different wow factor.

Woah, just reading up on wikipedia about cosworth and the escort rs cosworth...why have I not looked at this properly before?

It says about how the 92-94 and 94-96 versions are different, with the different turbochargers...what one would you be looking out for if you wanted to buy one? Whats the popular enthusiasts choice?

they are rare enough now. 5 years time they will be all stored up in private collections. the early ones were the proper ones. went a bit soft with the small lurbo, and optional SMALL WING!!

Yea, just read that bit...and was again thinking of the 5 year ish difference. However nice they are, realistically I'm going to be looking at something newer I guess...it'll be circa 2014-2015 if my polo lasts...so I probably want a 2005-2010 aged car unless I want to pay tonnes for something rare then.

What am I looking at? I haven't found a decent site with a list of WRC/Rallycross production cars for recent years yet...

they dont make road versions of rally cars apart from the EVO's and impreza's of this world anymore.

That's so sad...and you definately dont think escort cosworths will be around in 5 years time?

What do you all prefer out of the Impreza and Evo?

EDIT: This is just thinking ahead, still love my Polo and have lots of plans for it to turn it into my own little 1.0 litre rally car for now.

i say get a quattro of some sort, maybe a new-ish A4 or something? or older like an 80/90.

Yeah the earlier escos's are more sought after. But very few of them are standard now anyway... usually running 300bhp plus.

Evo eceryday for me... i still fancy a 7.

if you are after a rally car its not going to be an everyday car, its not the sort of car u can crawl in a traffic jam in.

are u looking for an actual rally car or just a road version of one thats used in rally such as a focus rs, evo, impreza,etc?

escort cossies are anything but cheap and common now so in a few years u'd need alot of money, in which case u could afford the renualt 5 turbo 2, a real rally car, or an old stratus, even an old quattro

I'd be looking for a road version, not a car to purely use for trackdays and events...unless I win the lottery within 5 years time. A road version, that I could spend money and loooads of time on, learn about the car...and use it for trackdays when i can save the money and fit them in. I simply like the rally look and style, so the best way to go I would have thought would be to go for a rally production car and to get that feel and be proud of the car.

I'd build up the mods if needed over time, but again 5 years is a long way off...I'm just getting excited about my future car list already.

Oh, just a side question...

I've been trying to look at cheap entry level motorsport. I know its question that comes up looads, but am just trying to get a decent idea of whats out there. So far, the only realistic option seems to be auto testing where the main running costs would be a small fee for event entry and lots of tyres unless something dramatically goes wrong. It looks pretty cool, is there anything else similar?

Has anyone had any experience of auto testing?

Loving how the cossies are a popular choice in here, but I'd agree with what's been said. 5 years down the line, they are gonna be shit hot on the pricing! Shame really, I always wanted an Escy :(. As for a good recommendation, the Evo has to be serviced at regular intervals so it might be cheaper to get a Scooby. A Focus RS is a nice motor and by then I expect they'll be readily available for about £8k.

Mark, go on MSA website and searcg for the nearest rally club to you, pop along to one of their Natter N Noggins, speak to a few members and see what they say.

I used to do a bit of Navigational 12 Car excercises where you get a standard car, work out navigation on where to go and fly off down country lanes. It's not expensive as the only thing we had to pay was £30 per event which included the entry fee and rally insurance, look into it if I was you.

If you need any help, I'm sure I can point you in the right direction
