Forced rat IS shit, because in some cases, people take perfectly sound cars, and purposfully rot them. I know that its surface rust etc. but unless they quit the whole rat look at some point, they will end up rotting out a perfectly decent car.

People are just ratting cars to fit in with the scene. People in here have been saying rat isnt scene etc. but it quite clearly is, because its not different anymore, its something people do because others have done it first.

End of the day, the entire scene thing is fairly bollocks, because of course, if someone sees a passat on bentlys and think it looks awsome, they will go and get bentlys for there passat.

There will always be trend setters, and there will be followers, If every single person was doing somthing totally different, 90% of the cars churned out would probably look wank.

Anyway, rat, particularly forced rat, is silly, its something that just happens, although, if you actually maintain, and look after your car correctly, it shouldnt happen atall....

yeh i agree with that and it's not cool at all. especially when they do it to old aircooled dubs.. it's such a waste.

Its their choice to be fair. But yeah I'm sure there is the odd descent car that suffers, but its just like any other form of modification, people roof chopping etc, its all sacrificing parts of the car to get the look you want.

I've got a merc W124 and I think I'm gonna bare metal the bonnet, and fuck it up a bit. Mainly just to annoy the squares at work who all drive grey audi's, who constantly ask me why I drive 'old cars' and why dont I 'save up and buy somthing 'nice''. They still wont get the idea that their values are all vanity and status, but just the fact that it pisses them off really cheers me up.

Every car I have or have owned has been an expression of my personality in some way or another, and none of them have ever been shiney or plastic and new. I never clean or polish my cars, and they often have dents and scrapes. Just cars that I think are 'cool', but that many people dont. I guess a lot of my cars have been a little 'rat look' just through neglect.

Infact part of the appeal of 'rat look' for me is the fact that it pisses off a lot of 'OMG EURO DETAILING POLISHED RIM' people, there are a lot of sound people in that crowd, but there seem a lot there who seem just like the grey audi drivers at work, if its not clean and shiney they dont want to know.

I just think that generally, as a car enthusiast, people should value classic cars. They are rare, and becoming rare-er, surley its far, far better to be preserving and restoring what we have left than intentionally rotting it etc.

I guess, a bonnet, or a wing or somthing which is rotted isnt such an issue, they are replacable panels, but if people are rotting shells and things it just becomes a real waste. Totally agree with the aircooled bit aswell, air cooled isnt my thing, but they sure as hell arent common cars today, and to rot them seems such a shame to me.

I'm by no means one to preach, and I also tend to be very poor at typing opinions up. I know there are many mk.3 or 2 polos about, but will there be in 10 years time? I know VWs are built very well, but they do still rot. Look at mk.1 golfs, such nice cars, I would probably sell lefty for a nice one, and it just makes me cringe when I see them ratted and rotting.

Painting a car matt, is fine, which is the point of this whole topic but rusting IMO isnt. Matt is totally reversable and isnt going to fuck the car over. Again, I know its a 6n, hardly a rare classic, but just seems a waste when people rot them etc.

Ere we go again with the narrow minded bollocks this forum has started breeding! I love the forum it's helped me out loads, but let the guy do his own thing no matter what he call it! He asked for a starting point not for every one to jump on his back n give him shit! We aren't telling him to do anything with his car, we aren't taking the piss because he wants to do certain things with his car. We are simply telling him that it isn't rat!

Oh and I'm not a hater of rat btw, As I was working on making a 'true rat' (doing nothing too it other than engine/brakes/susp etc) But it was too far gone for my liking. so the hunt is on once again.

But surely we are on about 'rat look'; and its is exactly that, a look. A style, nothing else.

And I quite like that scirrocco two faced thing, people abuse that car till they are blue in the face. But its one of the few cars I have ever seen that wouldnt look out of place in an art gallery. It really is a work of art, and if it was done by Banksy you would all fully bum it to death.

The reality of rat-look is stickers, matt paint and a rusty bonnet though really isnt it. We could all preach about what it actually is or means, but the reality of the situation is people are doing exactly that and calling it 'rat-look' so thats what it is! I mean there is a website called 'rat-look.co.uk' and thats what they seem to do. They are the people out there doing it so they can call it what they want as far as I'm concerned.

Its quite funny really. If someone asks what they should do to there car they are told do what they want. But if they come back with something thats 'rat look' they are told its shit. Even though they've just done what they wanted to do.

In my opinion this whole rat vs force rat is just bollocks. Its like anything as time goes on it changes and steps out into different branches. Like in the start there was music, now think of how many genres thats spread across and how many sub genres its made. Its the same with anything, over time new people will introduce new things which make it more popular and more ideas will get thrown about.

I'll admit a lot of the rat stuff is garbage but there are some really well though out cars with some really nice little touches that get over looked because its 'rat look'. Which is a shame because it does take time and effort into making anything that has lots of details. But the same can be said for 'euro' cars. There are plenty of half arsed poor attempts out there as well.

There is a certain appeal to ratty cars though. When I leave my Lupo anywhere I'm always worried and things do tend to happen to it because of stupid little jealous cowards. But when your car is tatty as fuck you can just leave it anywhere unlocked and know its not going anywhere.
