Lol, sorry. Please dont feel that because its your thread its directed at you though!

The 'scene' is like a beautiful woman. It looks good from the outside, but living with it is a constant hell.

rat look only belongs in the aircooled scene sorry

i agree more with this than anything else that has been said in this thread.

the day i see a proper hotrod polo will be the day i accept 'ratlook' on this forum.

wayyyy too much hype on the rat scene.

haters need to calm down

like

'amafagad, forced rat, do not want!!!'

Also people treat it as if its only a VW thing, 'only on aircooled' etc.

Plenty of rat stuff that I love thats nothing to do with VW...

That rocco really does look so sureal its unbelievable. Like you say its got that double take factor, looks like a potatochop.

Infact part of the appeal of 'rat look' for me is the fact that it pisses off a lot of 'OMG EURO DETAILING POLISHED RIM' people, there are a lot of sound people in that crowd, but there seem a lot there who seem just like the grey audi drivers at work, if its not clean and shiney they dont want to know.

A few years ago I found 'rat look' cars amusing for the same reason, but there are very few these days that genuinely pull the look off - those that do generally have had a lot of thought/effort put in, even if it's not apparent at first glance. That Scirocco's clearly had a lot of effort put in, and it's entertaining to look at. A Mk3 Polo with some matt panels covered in chalk and a window full of stickers just looks crap.

What I think is a shame is that there are lots of young dubbers now pikeying up their cars and covering them in crappy stickers/matt paint/marker pen scribblings etc. in an attempt to be cool. None of it is original or stylish, it looks shit and doesn't take any thought or effort - just seems pointless to me.

I take the piss out of the 'I love paint' brigade as much as the next man - because I like to use my cars, not polish them, but the new 'rat look' followers make me chuckle too - okay, your car might not be mint, but why try to make it worse? It's like deciding that you smell a bit, so instead of grabbing the shower-in-a-can you decide to shit yourself instead.

BTW - like the Defender, it looks like it's been used for its intended purpose, and no matt paint or shitty stickers in sight!

aye thinking about droping it and mebs some alley cats or ats's but i cant seem to not want matt paint like just think it looks great iam defos not going to have daft random things stuck all ova it like! its standed atm so i have meny amounts of obz like just can deside like haha

i've not read the rest of the thread yet but i'd just like to point out that painting a car in matt paint doesn't make it rat look. theres some real nice cars painted in a matt colour, if thats what you like then go for it, i'm painting my scirocco some kinda matt colour soon, not to make it rat, just because its cheap and i can do it myself lol.

Lol, Thats like saying 'debadging a car dosent make it euro'.

Its all part of the look isnt it. No 'look' consists of just one modification. And matt/satin paint is a key part of the 'rat look' because you cant really have gloss paint on a car thats meant to look neglected and utilitarian.

how is matt paint a key part of the rat look? are you trying to say that if you paint a car in matt paint it is classed as rat look? what he was describing he wanted to do to his car was slam it on tiny wheels and paint it matt, i was just pointing out to him that thats not rat look, and just because he wanted to paint it matt he should feel he has to put it into a click...

besides isn't giving a car a new paint job (even if it is a matt colour) totally against the whole ethos of the rat look? which is surely for it to look like its just been dragged out of a scrap yard/field/pond?

EDIT, or was there some sarcasm in your post that i missed?

Arrr. I might scream, its like going round in circles here. The point I was making was that nothing is ever one modification, everythings a combo. So when you said 'painting your car matt dosent make it rat look' I pointed out that no one just paints a car matt and calls it rat look, but painting a car matt does seem to be a key feature, combined with a few others that crams it into the rat-look 'box'.

I kinda see what you were saying but he was also on about other stuff, not just painting it matt.

You do make some fair points about painting a car being against the grain. But I guess thats why they call it rat LOOK. Because its a fake generated image, making a car look neglected etc. Matt paint tends to give the crappy faded/utilitarian look. Plus you can just slap it on with a brush and not really care.

Invent your own style ML, call it 'Matt-Look'. Do a powerpoint presentation with set rules and guidelines, so you can use it as evidence to shoot down newbies who are not true to the 'Matt-Look' and are doing it wrong.

Ok, that las bit might have been a bit of the ole sarcasm there!

fair point mate but like i said in my first post that you quoted 'i haven't read the rest of the thread yet', so he may of said he wanted to do other things to it after that, but at that point he was just saying he wanted to paint it matt green and slam it on ally cats, and i was just trying to point out that that isn't rat look, like you said one mod doesn't make a style/look

I seem to be the sole representative of the 'rat-look' here lol. I was never really a big fan of it, but I have kinda talked myself into it in threads like this. I started off moaning at people I thought were judging other people for doing somthing different to their car, but now I want to get a shitter and rat it up. I have never intentionally degraded a car in my life, any car that I've had that someone might acuse of being a rat has been purely accidental.

I like the fact that 99% of the people who see these cars are gonna be a bit stunned and bemused. Thinking its a pile of crap or abandoned or somthing, and the odd person might think a little about what other people see in cars. Thats why I dont like rat look cars with shiney wheels, becuase it kinda spoils the illusion.

See lowered and a shitty paint job kind of is a bit ratty in my opinion though, its weird. I'm not a big fan of all the roof racks and stuff. I think most people probably do that stuff to make it more obvious that they are going for a particular style, rather than people just thinking it looks like a knackered car.

ratty maybe, but thats not rat look though is it. see this is exactly the way my rocco's going, slammed with matt paint, does that mean its going to be rat look? i'm sorting all the rust and dents before the paint job so how can it be rat look if its got good body work?

If you where standing in front of my I would probably slap you for saying that

What aspect of my car is rat? honestly? Yet it has satin/matt paint! I also have smoothed my rear wiper and 'polo' badge. But its not Euro either is it.

On the other side. Love your defender.

And your not one of these pricks that gets scared of a puddle in it  A landrover used for what it was made for :D

Edit: Just read further

no one just paints a car matt and calls it rat look

I know of several people on various forums that have done this... lol

Also, I mean none of this as a dig at you Tommo. Your probably a very sound guy. Just airing opinions and that :D

I love it when people call matt/satin painted cars - RAT!! my nova wasnt rat and I'm pretty damn sure this isnt rat

27y6c1f.jpg

This is rat rod, its where rat look came from

23s9js0.jpg

Fair enough some rat look cars have matt paint, but just like that ferari, my old nova and many many other cars, not all matt cars are trying to be rat

but the new 'rat look' followers make me chuckle too - okay, your car might not be mint, but why try to make it worse? It's like deciding that you smell a bit, so instead of grabbing the shower-in-a-can you decide to shit yourself instead.

If only we could have sigs :lol::lol: that is solid gold LMAO made me piss and is true right to the bone :lol:8-)

I seem to be the sole representative of the 'rat-look' here lol.

No there are a lot of people who understand what rat look is a lot more than you do by the sounds of things....

but painting a car matt does seem to be a key feature, combined with a few others that crams it into the rat-look 'box'.

If you were a "sole representative" of rat-look you wouldnt have said that as you would know its all about natural patina, something you cant get out of a tin

Tres, Olly

Why thank you walshy

You also made some valid points there about matt paint, a battle well fought by the looks of it  And that hot-rod is mint! 8-)
