Biggest brake conversion for mk3 polo gt coupe

Featured Replies

Just wondered if anyone knew what the biggest brake conversion for a mk3 polo gt coupe would be, i wasnt sure if mk2 golf brakes or g60 brakes could be used?

Also, will be using 15" alloys.

mk2 golf brakes won't fit. The carrier mounts are different spacing to a mk3 polo. biggest people do is 256mm using Audi carriers which are rare!

you can make spacers to use 280mm (g60) brake discs with original calipers

or buy them off the caddy forum, basically any big brake kit designed for a mk1 golf will fit

Ahh right, well I'm not to fussed about how hard breaks would be to change, i mean if alot of cutting and welding is needed that doesnt matter. its just a friend of mine who is a mechinac and a good welder, and we're doing an engine conversion thats going to be err different to say the least lol, but we've already measured out everything, and with alot of hard work and some extensive chasis work it will fit, i just need to make sure that i'll be able to slow down without standing on the breaks everytime i see a roundabout lol.

I like your thinkin yeti but might have a few prblems installing lol.

280s will fit under 15" wheels and has been done before on g40s using brackets from AAT. But it's waaaaaaaay overkill for a GT. I'd just go for normal 239mm vented discs off a g40 with a decent set of fast road pads such as ferodo ds2000 or ds2500. 256mm conversion is a good one and can be done using vauxhall parts cheaply (the other method uses audi parts which are rarer and can cost getting on for £100). Even then though it's not really necessary on a gt, it's considered pretty good on a g40.

ah just realised you are doing an engine conversion so ignore my comments about things being overkill!

Haha, yea see its gonna have more power as standard then a g40 so I'm not taking any chances with it really lol, just wanna get the best i can. So you can get vauxhall parts to fit?

for 256mm discs yeah, I believe they are off mid90s astras and things like that, it's been talked about a few times on here if you do a search. I don't know the details myself. I have 256mm golf discs on mine using wilwood 4 pots but I don't know if that's within your budget.

Are you going to spill the beans on what this engine you are using is then? :D

Well i'll have a good look around see what my options are =]

And sorry but its a secret till its done =] first of its kind i believe nothing on the net =], but dont worry, i'll make sure to take lots of pics, i'll probs post one big gallery when done.

Can't help much with the brake side of things, but wanting to see this conversion when its up and going. So make sure you stick a thread up somewhere :D

Haha dont worry i will, gonna take a while though, i've gotta get custom shafts made, design whole new set of engine mounts and then start cutting and welding the chassis to make it fit lol etc etc. hoping to have done before xmas though :).

Hmm sounds odd polomon lol, i'll have a look into it :).

Ahhhh, now that sounds more like it lol, yea that had crossed my mind before, any idea how much you can pick up the set for?

what ever you do dont put 280 discs and spaced out g40 calipers

their propper dodgy , the poor lil calipers cant take the abuse and you`ll end up on a round about

256`s are very good

but if you need more get to willwood or alike and get some propper calipers for the 280`s and custom brackets made up , mate did this to his starlet , awsome brakes :-)

what makes you say that? loads of people have used that conversion on golfs and stuff back in the day and I've never heard of problems. If anything the caliper should have an easier time of it because it requires less force to stop the wheels when the caliper is grabbing a big disc.

256's are fantastic, best modification I made to my Polo. Made it so much nicer to drive.

^ I'd agree with Tav...along with a bigger brake master clyinder it's transformed the braking in my G40.

because i`ve been in a car with them on , and after 3, 130 to 40 hard brakes the next time they got hit the brakes did not work and we ended up on a round about :-( . fitted 256`s to the car and never had anymore worries

on golfs and stuff they normally use g60 280`s , or do you know their the spaced g40 ?

the caliper on the 256 is bigger than a g40 , and in being so will put more force on the pads/disc with less effort

Brakes did not work in what way? The caliper fell off? You boiled the fluid? The pads over heated? What was the failure...other than driving like a prick at 130mph and braking to 40mph on the road repeatedly.

hush yo mouth . i was not driving , and the car was built for it , so it got used

the brakes never felt good on the car , and had a fluid change about a month before .

dont know if the pads got hot . but i do know that the pagid fast road pad that got put on it never messed about and their fairly cheap

it just felt like my mate was hardly pushing the pedal , but when i looked at him he was trying to pull the steering wheel off .

any how i`m giving my advise and if the polo`s going over 200 bhp you want good brakes

but if you want to do this my mate still has the brackets , and i know he dont want them pm me

there is a 280mm or 288mm conversion available using vauxhall parts, calibra turbo or something like that i believe. VAG disks, GM calipers and carriers, shoulder bolts and GM hoses and pads

Polo d, it seems you've looked at the facts and draw the wrong conclusion, theres no reason why a VW11 caliper with the correct pad cannot be used on a 280mm disk given the correct adaptors.

you are correct about the smaller piston, so a greater pressure is required to transit the same force onto the disk, but the master cylinder is also smaller equalling that out. and to create the same turning moment on the disk, the caliper wont have apply as much force on a 280mm disk as it will on a 239mm, simple physics. back to school for you.

i'd have suggested the problem lied in glazed pads or boiled fluid mixed with a monkey at the wheel driving dangerously on a public road.

in fairness most brakes are a bit poo after 3x 130mph stops ....unless its a uber racing car spec jobbie
