Hi all,

Took my 6n for wheel balancing on Tuesday. Chap told me that he'd put the two front wheels on the back because they were slightly warped, but said it would be OK. Went to Norwich and back yesterday (100 mile round trip) and it was like driving on cobbles the whole time, absolutely awful! Worse, in fact, that when I took it in!

So, I was looking at getting some new wheels anyway and was wondering what the best size is in practical terms. I did want to get some coilovers at some point, but can't afford new wheels and coilovers and I need the wheels more! Lol! So what's the best on standard suspension? My current wheels are 14" and they look OK. I notice Motorworld have some good deals on rims and tyres starting at around £299 which is my kind of price, but the smallest size they do is 15". Would these be too big for the standard suspension?

As always, any advice gratefully received! :-D

iv got 15s on my 6n, and they fint nicely on lowwered suspension, so on standard shocks they should be fine. just make sure you get the correct offset etc.

Thanks for that Jon. I was just a bit concerend that they may be a touch big and heavy for the standard set-up. The car came with VW's 13" alloys which I could put back on, but I didn't feel happy with them; too small and too thin! Lol!

I have found the handling pretty bad since the balancing, so if 15" will improve that it's worth a shot. I was looking at some Wolfrace wheels on eBay. They're 195/50/15. My current wheels are 185/55/14 so a set of Wolfrace should be OK shouldn't it?

Well yes, I agree 14" wheels look fine, but the problem is new 14" rims are difficult to find at a decent price. I don't want another set of second-hand wheels or I might be back to square one and out of pocket to boot. :-) The set I have now cost me almost £400 by the time I had them reshod because the bloke I bought them off said all tyres were legal but when they turned up they weren't. For that price I could have bought a new set, bur for the fact you can't squeeze 15" on a MK3! :-D Now I've got a car 15" will fit on I'd rather get a brand new set and be done with it.

I would go for a set a 15x7 between et25-40 will be fine, and obviously 4x100 stud diameter. Off the top of my head I think the bore size is 57mm but I could be wrong lol. Hope this helps.

Can I just reel this back onto the original subject please. As much as I appreciate the suggestions of width etc, I really don't have an endless budget, so I'm looking at no more than £400 all in. Having had the briefest of looks at Wolfrace's website, 7 or 8 inch wheels are only available on 17"/18" wheels anyway, so... I suppose they're out there, but I need something sharpish as I'm off to Brum next Friday.

So, widths aside, and assuming I'll be skint for eternity and won't be able to afford coilovers for a considerable amount of time, can I get 15" wheels on the 6n without any detrimental effects? Having had a good look around Wolfrace's site I also found these: Venom I really, really like these and they work out a lot cheaper than the 14" Milanos!

I would keep an eye out for a second hand set personally.

I'm not keen on getting another second hand set to be honest. As I said, I ended up paying a fortune for the set I have now and I really don't want to go through all that trouble again. I've got a long drive on Friday next and I'd rather just get a new set now than buy a second hand set to find they're rubbish and have to drive all the way to Brum and back with the wheels I've got now. Or buy second hand, find they're rubbish and still have to buy a new set! I just can't afford it. People are far too eager to sell off their dross under the heading of "As new!" or "Excellent condition!" knowing full well the items are nothing of the sort! I'd rather not take the chance, especially on something that carries the whole car and moi! Been there, done that, got the wobbly wheels!

Most are refurbed and rebuilt to better than new standard....

I think sometimes you are lucky and sometimes you arn't!

I paid £120 for min delivered and new tyres and refurb later overall they cost me £250

My mates buying some £17's for his ibiza tomorow (i know he's an idiot!) for only £100, we'll find out how good they are, but that could be a steal!

That's my point really. I don't have the time or money to be running around like a headless chicken on Thusrsday morning wishing like hell I'd just bought new wheels because the one's I got off eBay (hypothetically) are duds!

So for those suggesting second hand wheels, I say again, NO! I don't want them! I want NEW ones! OK? Good!

Edit: Bugg'r it, just bought the Venoms. Really like 'em and a few people have said 15" is OK, so I've done the deed. Went for 195/45/15 tyres. Little more expensive, but managed to use a 25% code, so all in, with postage they came to £338 and some odd pence. Plus there's a 3 year warrenty on Wolfrace wheels, so I'll feel better about them and if I feel comfortable with new wheels I won't be worrying all the time that something might go wrong on a long journey like I have been doing. Hope they look as good on the car as they do in the pic!

what you on about, whats ridiculous about et40? thats the offset of my 15x7's mate.
