17 AND £63 A MONTH INSURANCE ON MY VALVER.

Featured Replies

smithy but with that 1 years driving experience with quinn did it not amount to some sort of small discount?? i am with them now and they said i need to send the paperwork to them within 30 days or my named driving experience discount gets revoked??

i always thought driving with a provisional it was someone over the age of 21, with a full license with 3 years driving experience, not 100% either way when your young and pass your test, you may as well walk around with no pants, because insurance is always gunna rape you.

it is fronting and it is illegal to be the main driver on the car, but to be down as a named driver.

its been illegal for many moons, and insurers can and do check up on it.

if they come view your car and notice that its got stickers all over it and new band cds and stuff all over it, college books etc, they are going to clock on that its not your dads motor and your insurance will be invalidated.

and at 17 driving a valver and saying your going to be speeding all the time that may cancel your insurance if you had a tracker fitted means your probably going to be driving like a bawbag.

do hope you dont crash mate, but i have a feeling you probably will, as were not invincible behind the wheel and a fast car + young driver = a fail waiting to happen

even young drivers in 1 litre paxos and the like drive them at like a tonne on the motorways are far too fast veering in and out of town traffic.

but good luck mate! ;)

grunge speaks sense, a few of my friends have drove around after they've passed thinking there some sort of jenson button, and ultimately have ended in a crash, personally i wish for my first year i driving i took out my own policy atleast then i would of gotten a decent premium with HIC or Brentacre this year... but then again i didnt use the car much because i was at uni so didnt see the point in paying a bomb...

Yes mate exactly what happened to me.

Direct Line never even sent me a renewal quote after my first year, i had to request one when my insurance ran out.

It said nothing about any No Claims, so i rang them, by this time i was already switching to Quinn so i could cover my mods, and they sent a letter saying my mom (who's policy it was) has earned 2 years NCB! This was the first time she'd ever had car insurance..

More phonecalls to Direct Line's fantastic foreign call centres, and calls from Quinn basically demanding proof of NCB immediately... finally got a letter saying i had ''hadnt claimed or made any losses in the duration of the policy''..

We thought that it was worded weirdly, then the penny dropped when Quinn denied it and added just over £400 to my policy.

lol jokz, god knows why you lot do all the fronting crap, soon as i passed i paid for my own insureance, then again iv always liked doing stuff by my self when it comes to money.

my insurance was £1000 a year as named driver. when i passed it didnt go up. i get NCB and can tranfer them to start my own policy when i want.

as for mods, its up to you

Doesnt matter about being a named driver, if you're on a provisional, you cant even drive your car alone.

Yes u have to have someone sitting next to you who is over the age of 21 and has been passed there test for 3 or more years.

I am driving on my provisional as it is wayyyyy better driving my own car when ever i want, than paying £25+ to get a driving lesson for 30mins. waste of money that way as i can spend under £50 to fill my tank and drive with someone next to me for about a week and still be learning.

I will probably take out my own policy and pay for it even if its expensive. I would rather have it cheap now and more expensive later as i will be in a better paid job and will be able to afford it then. :)

Thanks for the advice and comments guys, much appreciated. :)

Kuszpit :)

How you gonna drive to that 'better paid job' if you cant drive the car by yourself?

tbh, i was driving my valver at 17 in my mums name, and that was costing 700, i lowered it and the insurance cancelled the policy on me :( so went in my own name for £1600

at 19 and with 1yrs ncb i jumped from the 100bhp valver to a 240bhp ibiza and now with only 1yrs ncb its 1350!

NCB makes a massive difference

thats fucking shite man I'm paying £1178 a year on my 1.4 8v with no mods :\ who u with stebbi??

its not just about insureance companys, theres so many other factors that come in to play as said above.

me 1.4 cl, 1 Crash, Lost all no claims, now paying Fully Comp - £600. :) or £1500 on a 1.8T Golf. :ninja:

Plus, some insurances let named drivers earn their own NCB.. LIke Directline for instance.

I'm under my parents name and i get no claims with direct line so once I've got the 1 year ill get my own policy 8-)

and i have pass plus which is bollocks (Y)

Direct Line wont let you modify your car until you're 25..

And not alot of insurers (ones that like modified cars at least) will accept your named driver discount.

Fair enough if thats what you want to do, but driving around in your own car you pick up bad habit's, and you're not being taught how to pass the test. Driving without an instructor builds confidence, and can help you to practive manouvers, but to me, it seems pretty pointless just aimlessly driving around, spending £50 a week on petrol, when you could have a 2 hour lesson a week for £40 and learn so much more.

And £25 for 30 min's driving lessons? Where the fuck are you getting your lessons from?

£40 for 2 hours down here. Pointless having 1 hour lessons imo, soon as you get into the swing of things the lesson is over.

Fair enough then

i dout i will actualy do anything to it tho tbf all i use it for is to get to college and the girlfriends when i get a more powerfull poloooo like 1.6 then maybe start to do something with it 8-)

i dont think that is 100% true what you say about not learning as well. if your parent is a good enough driver then you learn just as well and dont end up paying stupid money for lessons!! my dad took me out in my car, i never paid for or did one lesson and i passed my test first time! then again i do have a racing lisense and started racing cars when i was 13!

If you get the driver record which your instuctor is supposed to fill out as you learn, you will be able to go through the criteira needed to pass your test easy enough, and dont into the habit of driving faster or not indicating etc and saying oh ill do it on the test because you wont lol do it everytime your in your car propaly when learning and then your less likey to make a mistake in the test!! :-D good luck mate

as for insurance my first car was a 1.6 mk2 golf so it was a bit pricey on insurance, so i was on my dads for about 6 months then i found my own and just shop really hard and found a quote that was cheaper than i was paying as named driver! arian flux was quite good.

hope that helps

Yeh i know what you mean about the habbits. But i am making sure i do all that everytime as i will when i pass my test. (hate 10-2 tho, worst ever rule. I personally think that i am in less control doing 10-2 than if i drive another way, but doing it till i pass as thats what is expected.)

I have been a petrol head since i was born and i first drove a car when i was 5 on my dads knee.lol so from a young age i knew how everything worked and could drive a car on my own from about the age of 11 so i know how to drive and also know my limits so i listen to everything whoever sitting next to me says and to be honest i have known a few driving instructors(that r my dads mates) and know my brothers and dad r better drivers and tell me the exact same thing anyway.

Oh and i live near aberdeen where nearly everything is more expensive. :S So £25 for an hour is pretty good here, some go up to around £34 or summit and then £50 for 2 hours is the cheapest.

I dont just pointlessly drive around lol. I drive to places i need to be etc.lol i dont just go out for no reason. :D

I'm the same with Quinn, this is my second year of insurance, they wouldnt accept it as a No Claims Discount, only as a years driving experience.

Oh and i dont know if its changed in the 2 years I've been driving, but dont you have to have someone over a certain age and with a full license in the car with you at all times if you're insured on a provisional, and have L plates on the car?

yeh mate pretty sure that still applies. i think the person accompanying you has to have 3 years driving experience or be at least 21 with a license?

not sure if thats exactly right, but its along those lines

They must be over 21 AND have 3 years experience AND also be insured to drive the car

I'd recommend an instructor and getting practice in on the side. You need cheap experience but you also need to pass your test!

Also why do so many people go with Quinn? They offered me £800 provisional then jacked it up to £2100 for when I passed. Sod that. Went with NFU and got £1,100 provisional and full. Bloody rip off Quinn are.

Quinn are VERY hit and miss...
