I've had a loud humming noise coming from my polo (1996 6n SE) for like a year now, it's always loudest between 30-40 mph. The strangest thing is the noise will totally disapear on some occassions, then a week later will come back and get VERY loud. I've been driving it with the noise for over a year now, but its so anoying!!

Anywayz, the noise sounded as though it was coming from the front passenger side wheel, so I had a new hub and wheel bearing fitted and the noise is still there!! Could it be the gearbox as I know thats more to the left-hand side of the car, or could it be the drivers side front wheel (although that would be really strange)?

Well the whole car kinda vibrates when the humming is at its loudest! But I can't really feel it through the gearstick... You would think its the gearbox as the wheel hub and bearing from the passenger side have now been changed, and thats where it apeared to be coming from. But I'm wondering whether it's work changing the drivers side too?! If it was still humming after that surely it would have to be the gearbox....

as you are driving along, see if the sound cuts out when you push the clutch in and coast. if it does, then it could be gearbox, if it doesnt cut out then its probs a wheel bearing

noises can be thrown very easy. I had same situation in my old car, changed passenger side because thats where i thought it was coming from. Only to find out it was the drivers side that was shot.

When you go round some corners does it disappear?

Pressing the clutch doesnt rule out gearbox. Cos its still going to be in gear with the wheels spinning.

i had the same problem with my 6n and it turned out to be the wheel bearing, when i turned the noise dissapeared if that happens its most proberly your bearing mate

Ok guys thanks very much for all the feedback!! I will get the opposite side changed and see what happens, i guess i could do the hub and bearing which is what I did with the passenger side.
