Stuttering when accelerating at low revs?....

Featured Replies

My 2001 Polo Gti has started stuttering/hesitating when accelerating at low revs.

If you're in say 3rd at under 2000revs its ok if you accelerate very slowly, but if you accelerate a bit harder (not really going for it, just normal acceleration) then it revs but occassionaly stutters/hesitates - as if its misfiring a bit. Above 2000 revs its fine.

Anyone had this before or got any ideas? I've ordered some new plugs and some carb cleaners to spray into the air inlet to clean out any crap (I release this is injection and doesnt have a carb!) but anyone got any other ideas what could be up?

cheers :)

fule filter?

if it was fuel filter i would imagine you would have this stuttering through the whole rev range.. though couldn't harm to change it anyway.

maybe its a timing issue?

I had this issue. I fixed it by replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm, and HT leads.

I had same prob with my mk 3, like above: switchin my spark plugs and ht leads fixed the problem. But, mines started doing it again =/ so help aswell plzz

my mk3's AAU only does this either when its cold or lowish on fuel. have you let the car run and very low fuel recently? maybe you have dragged all the dirt through?

Max

ran my car dry out a few times now is that why mines stuttering?? haha not good

yeh you should never run your car dry mate. i usually fill up with about a quarter left if that!

money is tight atm lost job n everythin :\

haha sorry to hear that mate.

fuel running low aint the problem as fuels gravity fed and sucks shit through any whos, plus I've had this problem as well

no , thats why you have the fuel pump, its inevitable that running cars dry is going to suck dirty fuel through. I can allways tell.

^Lol theres no such thing as dirty fuel at the bottom of the tank! The 'dirt' will float if anything and then get stuck in the fuel filter. Just one of those stupid internet rumours that gets circulated.

P.s. to the OP, I'm not sure what it could be, probably spark related.

Have you cleaned the throttle body recently? Have you had it scanned with VAG-COM?

Just realised you've bought carb cleaner! Don't spray it directly into the TB though.

Mine had a similar problem and it was the coil. It felt like some flicked a switch for a second as you accelerated.

are you actually kiddin? dont just comment on someone elses comment if you haven't got a clue what your talkin about, Ever looked into a fuel tank? corrosion dirst and dust particles build up and cause a layer of dirt around the inside of the tank, when the tank is partial full the dirt is alot less consentrated but when fuel levels are low the dirt and petrol are alot more concentrated and the fuel filter will only filter bigger particles from the line. plus after a few years the fuel filters detoriate. causing the mixture to be slightly dirty.

max.

..do you mean don't spray it directly into the inlet manifold once you've taken the TB off? If so, even still it doesn't matter.. most cleaners are designed to just get burned up by the engine when you start running it again

at least 'Wynns' stuff does anyway, it says to clean the inlet system and TB as much as you can. I'm sure most other cleaners will be similar.

isn't that why you're supposed to change your fuel filter as part of a regular service? i don't think my fuel filters have ever been in the car for 'a few years'..

not allways , If you take it to a vw serivice station they wont bother changing it if its looks sound.

Mine makes a clicky noise when I accelerate, what was wrong with the coil?

Iv got this exact same problem mate, i have changed - plugs, leads, and fitted a brand new genuine VW dizzy and tried a different coil from another car and its still doing it!! Tried scanning it on an OBD and got nothing back!! Its a bit of a guessing game for me now!! Think I'm gonna try the Air Flow Meter next. I just dont want to have to buy a brand new one!! anyone out there with one, PM me a price with postage to Thruxton, Hampshire!! To anyont that has been looking at my car on the for sale part of this forum, this problem will be fixed before car is sold!!!

Let me know how your getting on mate, as I'm desperate for a cure now!!

Cheers. Callum. :-D

I gots my polo going into garage next week to have front lowered, so if i haven't worked it out by the weekend i've asked them to check for me. They shoulds know since they were the ones who told me how to fix it originally

I have a similar set of symptons, stuttering at low revs and you can onli gently accelerate!!, now i have checked the igniton system, new coil, new rotor arm, dizzy cap n all tht, and no difference, its not coolant temp sensor thinking its too hot,

i found my inlet manifold to throttle body was split and maybe causing and air leak making it run lean wen accelerating, as its pullin air through the gap, i had that changed and fuk all difference, also i had the inlet manifold ported out, and now its evn worse missfiring, so it is deffinatly running too lean.

both fuel pumps prime and run, however i dnt kno if the main pump is not creating enough pressure, so when the engine demands more fuel, wen accelerating, its doesnt have enough. So FUEL PRESSURE is a good thing to check

my engine stutters for a lil bit, then picks up, I'm guessing lambda realises not enough fuel and opens the injector longer, hence the delay before picking up.

anyone else have ideas?

Old thread, The reason most 6n2 GTi's stutter is due to the crap build up on the throttle body butterfly!

Clean this off and low rpm with small throttle movements will be much smoother!

I have a similar problem with a late 2021 facelift Polo 1.0 TSI. In the range 2800 to 3000 revs it will occasionally miss a beat or stutter then correct itself. Feels like a temporary fuel block or timing issue. Will not happen all the time, can happen in all gears and generally worse on the motorway in fifth. Buffeting effect. Dealer cannot find anything wrong with it of course. This comes on top of the interior courtesy lights not working on delivery traced to wiring in the roof panel shorting. Pulled the car apart to fix and now have rattle in the dashboard. After thirty years of VWs this might be the last.

If it's a misfire under load, I'm pretty much always going to go with ignition system. I've no specific experience of that car, but the ECU should have a log of an intermittent misfire and be able to tell you which cylinder/s it's on.

I know what you're saying about current VW's, but, in all honestly, it's all modern cars. They're built to last the finance period if you're lucky.
