I'm pretty sure that car now can't be registered though - it won't pass modern Type Approval tests. VW have a Mk2 GTI which was unregistered and I'm told it now can't be put on the road.

unlucky for who ever buys it then if this is the case, maybe that's why he's selling it?

09 plate mk1...

as alex said I'm sure there is some rule, but the seller mentions an age related plate.

Might end up going on a Q plate?

What a stunner

But tbh, would you want to put it on the road considering the rarity?

i dont know the technical side of it, but 6 grand, its daft money!

if you didn't put it on the road you'd be a complete dickhead.

sorry but i think it all bull sheet.

same colour spray on the wheels??

selling for a friend??..ehhhh......''I HAVE A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY IN THIS'' then a line below....''ADVERTISING FOR A FRIEND SO PLEASE PHONE 07717215592 ANY SENSIBLE TIME.....''

new??? ''BUT I DO HAVE EVERY PART TO BUILD THIS CAR TO ITS ORIGINAL CONDITION'' original condition?? i woulnt say that.or does he mean new

It's not new, it's an old shell, Chris Peacock that built the green Mk5 Golf chased after it and basically outed the guy selling it..

Does seem a tad dodgy and the £6k asking price for a shell? It maybe real rare but £6k? NO THANKS.

That's bidding price isn't it, 25 bid.

I'm marking it to watch, interesting to see what it makes.

its an 83 manufactured shell, it's been painted silver, hence the spray on the wheels... parts from VW don't come painted you know!

I know of a lad who's just got a brand new GM shell for his mk2 cavalier SRI. He's going to re-shell his existing one as he wants to keep the original plate etc.

It's not that expensive for what it is though.

I know a company down south that have a couple of un-registered cars.

One is a 1970's Porsche 911 Turbo which is up for sale for £250k, and there was also a DB5 or 6 which was up for £420k

Thing is, buying it would be so pointless.

But think of the cars you could buy for that! Bit ott imo.

Yeah exactly. Would be pointless buying them unless it was an investment for a museum or you were Jay Leno or JK lol.

if that's the case shouldn't some one report it to ebay before some one makes a massive mistake through false advertisement?

God knows whats going to happen, he's probably got mates bidding for him anyway...

GUYS AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAUGE

Isaw this when it first went on ebay and like most i was sceptical aboutits history, but as an unregistered shell and the misleading info inthe add i presume there was a good possibility of being genuine.

I did some digging about and managed to fill in some of the blanks judge for yourself. Its a long one

First off it is a 1983 Campaign GTI, in silver, registered 12/8/83

Guy who owns it is Bill Walton but I've also heard the name Mr Ross.

Imanaged to get the chassis number  WVWZZZ17ZEW044222 and calledVW and as the ebay listing said they have no history off this vehiclebeing registered to a UK Dealer there could be a number of reasons forthat a few of which i was offered were it may have been purchaseddirect from VW by a collector, investor or non VW retailer. When a VWwas sent to a dealer back in 1983 once it was sold the selling dealeris attached to the vehicle on what records VW UK kept back in the day.

Everythinglooks good at this point, so called in a favour from my dealer and gotthem to do some digging around on the chassis number. Nothing came backother than it left the factory as a built GTI in 1983.

Still looking good, did an HPI on the chassis number and again nothing came back.

Atthis point I'm thinking ok new shell, poss stolen back in 83 from theport or dealers before it was registered, stripped for parts then theshell was stored and passed on a few times. So i call DVLA and enquirehow would i go about putting it back on the road if its a complete carand never used (which it isnt) it would be require MOT, TAX andInsurance (dont on the chassis number) then they will register at thecurrent date and put it on an 1983 age related plate. However if it isa shell which you are then putting an engine in then it would beregistered as a Q plate or if you provide evidence of the date of theengine they will assign a date related plate based on this.

Againim thinking ok, i buy new VAG parts stick an engine in it and blag DVLAto get it reg as a new car (ie dont tell them about the engine), bingo0 miles 83 campaign reg 2009.

I heard from the forums the guywas looking for 5k for it which i was prepared to pay so tried toarrange an appointment to go and see it. I was on business in Liverpooland live in Scotland so it was easy for me to swing past Bishop Aughtonwhere the car is stored. I called the number on the listing a fewtimes (07717215592) no answer and no answer phone to leave a call.

Theni called the number from the other adds on ebay (07795 642696) abreakers yard finaly get to speak to someone. But its only the guysmate and he cant make any decisions and i need to speak to Bill Walton, then he gets very defensive when i start asking questions about thechassis number thows a hissy fit and gets me off the phone.

Icall Bill again a few times then send him a text saying I'm not wastinghis time, i wanna cum see it and if I'm happy and we can agree a pricehe will get a deposit and i will collect within a few days.

Fewhours later I'm on t he M6 and think i will give it one last try andcall the breakers again to see if he has another number for Bill, heapologies by saying hes trying to run a business and getting 100's ofcalls from people wasting his time about this mk1, which of course isunderstandable to apology accepted he agrees to try and get a hold ofhis mate.

I get home to Scotland a few hours later still no call.

Igive the guy one last try and send an email via ebay saying I'm andenthusiast not a time waster, I've got the cash and can i come down onSunday to view it.

This morning i finally get a call from Bill, AT LAST.

Soi ask the usual whats the story with the car, where did you get it,whats the history to try and put together a plausible picture.Seemingly the shell was stored inside under a sheet in a commercialbusiness for 10 year where by the business was sold and the new ownerof the business sold the shell to bill (this is really weird as thats astory I've told many times about my first MK1 GTI, but it was a completecar with 20k on it)

All still looking good, my thoughts thenmove to the originally of the car, from the pics i new it wasnt a goodpaint job but I've got a mate with a spray booth (eh K33ts  ) Soi wanted to get some info on the condition of the shell my question isis there any sign or use on the shell? at this point the guy throws ahissy fit, so after his rant i said politely that it was it was new inthe listing details at the top he gives me a mouthfull of abuse thenhangs up on me with F**K OFF.

I'm stunned but annoyed so i callback and give him a bit of the old GBH of the ear hole back, and hestarts on a rant about people wasting his time. I tell him i know MK1'sinside out I'm not a time waster but hes not going to pull the wool overmy eyes with a rotten shell which has had a quick paint. I get told "iwill not being selling the car to you, do not call back" and get hungup on.

In summary the shell is not NEW and most prob rotten fromthe pics, there is no Vin plate on the slam panel in the pic so mythinking is that VW possibility screwed up and assigned the car 2chassis numbers when it left the factory. One stamped on the car at thedrain tray and another for build purposes in the boot floor sticker, the owner has noticed this and removed the details of the other chassisnumber, if anyone does go to view it id be interested if the chassisnumber is visible on the drain tray area.

Another possibility isDVLA mix up, probably the chassis number registered one digit out, might have came into the scrap yard and someone noticed when checkingthe V5 against the car. Either way its a used shell, mileage unknownwhich will most likley go onto a Q plate.

in my opinion unless you want to be dodgy its worth less than a rotten GTI shell.

God knows whats going to happen, he's probably got mates bidding for him anyway...

Makes for an interesting read - the listing should be stopped, someone could be about to make a BIG mistake....

I also noticed, the on the boot there is a GTI badge. Surely if it was just a unregistered shell there wouldn't be a badge. I'm not totally clued up on car manufactoring, but surely they don't badge up a car before they even put an engine in?!

Listing has been updated

HI TO ALL THE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE PHONED, AND EMAILED.

THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT BRAND NEW, EBAY DEFAULT SETTING STATES NEW, THAT IS EBAY NOT ME.

THIS CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1983 SO THERE IS NO WAY IT CAN BE BRAND NEW.

THE HISTORY OF THE CAR IS: I ATTEMPTED TO REGISTER THIS CAR WITH THE DVLA WITH THE VIN NUMBER STAMPED IN SHELL. THEY DID NOT ANSWER. I PHONED THE DVLA AND THEY ASKED ME TO GO DIRECTLY TO THEIR LOCAL OFFICE WHICH I DID. I PRESENTED THE CAR AND ALL IDENTIFICATION AND THEY VERIFIED THAT THE CAR HAD NEVER BEEN REGISTERED. THEY CHECKED EVERY POSSIBILITY AND CATAGORICALLY HAVE SHOWN THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN REGISTERED.

I HAVE HAD SHELL RESPRAYED ONLY BECAUSE LACQUER WAS PEELING AFTER 26 YEARS.

I HAVE SEARCHED THIS SHELL THROUGH VW AND HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION TO ITS MANUFACTURE AND TO ITS DATE OF MANUFACTURE. THE PAPERWORK I HAVE SHOWS IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1983

VW RECORDS SHOULD SHOW 3 BOXES, FIRST BOX IS MODEL I.E GOLF, 2ND BOX, SHOWS TYPE I.E GOLF GTI, 3RD BOX SHOWS MAIN DEALER SUPPLIER.

THIS CAR HAS 1ST AND 2ND BOX MARKED, BUT 3RD BOX NOT. THIS MEANS THAT IT HAS NEVER BEEN REGISTERED THROUGH VW MEANING IT MUST HAVE BEEN PRIVATELY BOUGHT OR BEEN A SHOW CAR FOR VW OR BOUGHT BY PRIVATE COLLECTOR. THIS HAS BEEN A FULL CAR WHEN ORIGIANLLY BOUGHT AS SHOWN BY CODE STICKER IN REAR STATING ALL TRIM.

PLEASE IF ANYBODY NEEDS TO KNOW ANYMORE INFORMATION PLEASE PHONE THIS NUMBER 07717215592 NOT MINE IN OTHER LISTINGS.

ALSO DO NOT ASK FOR VIN NUMBER IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM YOU WANT IT AS IT WILL NOT BE GIVEN

a rusty drive shaft? what looks like corrosion around where the clutch goes through the bulk head? if it was a fully car surely worth more before it was stripped etc etc ? All together to many dodgey/ minus' imo...

I emailed and asked if there was a pic of the stamped chassis number

"Yes but its only available to buyer"

That was the only reply i got.....

Exactly what i was thinking, what X5Pea has wrote is also interesting. That guy propablly knows his contacts as well so I'm keen to believe that it is a load of crap as he has said.

Another guy has said that it is more likley the DVLA have lost all the details on the car as he has friends who have had the same problems with their classic cars. i think it is one of the first posts on the thread on edition38.

dodgy as hell. Only consolation is that the buyer offering 6k is probly his mate pumping the price up
