alright guys, just got some nice lookin golf steelies to replace my O.Z routes, but i haven't lowered the car yet it just didnt look like it needed to be, but now iv got 13's instead of 14's thats another half an inch arch gap so i think its time to get her dropped abit. only thinking like 40mm front and back.

Heres the problem , i can get a set of 40mm springs for like £20 and I'm abit strapped for cash at the moment,

Will the standard shocks want to be uprated or will they not be able to cope?

and also has anyone got any pics of a 86c coupe on 13's with only a 40mm drop?

40mm drop on standard shocks is cool, I've done it and got no issues.

hmmm yeh thats the responce from alot of people on here on various threads. I was just wondering , has anyone ever got any lowerings springs that arnt a really bright colour like red or yellow or somethin? I'm not feeling them. Id like black or silver or somethin? long shot i know.

^^ more like you want to run them without telling insurance (we all know bright coloured springs are a dead give away)

if you find an old set most of the red powdercoat will have probably flaked off anyway, either that or just get them powdercoated black or paint them in black underseal which wont flake off).

(i am in no way suggesting you should change the colour to avoid declaring them btw)

if your only going 40mm just fit the fronts as it gives the car a better stance than fitting 40s all round

in the future you may want to go lower, then you would have to buy a new set.

So make sure before you go and buy you may even want 80/80 kit????

Lowering 40mm on standard shocks is absolutely fine, it wears the shocks out slightly premature that's it. I've ran 40mm springs on two cars now and had no issues.

well with the kit ill get i.e uprated shocks + 40mm springs i can allways sell the springs and buy some shorter ones if i want.

Also I'm not going for the slammed look so i dont want to be that low!

Its the best set-up in my experience,and is totally safe and Mot friendly. In fact,mine had a smoother ride than standard,due to the progressive springs giving a soft first inch of travel. This was with new Bilstein gas shocks and new eurocarparts Ventura 40mm springs though - but they were still seemingly like new after 35k miles.

I dont suggest lowered top mounts though,as the spring may then sit loose,because it aint far off anyway.

I'm now running a slightly adjusted PhilJ kit which was 60/40 when he sent it out and now 65/50. Looks fantastic and handles amazing (still on previous solid alloy +15mm ARB castor mounts and rest poly,though) but its bloody annoying and is shaking the car to bits whilst giving me headaches.

If you cant afford a 60/40 Bilstein H&R kit,then just use quality new standard shocks and 40mm progressive springs (preferably with G-laderseite ARB blocks in any case) you wont be disappointed.

whats the risk? have you ever tried it? i'm guessing not, as there is no risk at all. If anything the mk2 and 3 polos ride better on 40mm lowered springs using std shocks, than the do on a totally std setup. still comfortable, yet much better at cornering, esp. when used in conjunction with a ged front brace bar.

if you want a comprimise between a better handling car and one that doesnt shake your brain to bits, its a far better option than running a phillJ budget lowering kit (i run a phillj kit on my g40 and whilst it does handle well, it isnt the most smooth ride, but for what the kit costs you cant really winge)

so you guys saying just get 40mm springs and keep standard shocks? or what?

also how much is the H & R kit , it doesnt say on phills add.

I then kept the same springs but used G-max sports shocks. Much nicer ride, the steering wheel didn't fly out of my hands when I hot a pothole and the car didn't bottom out.

So if you're going to lower it, don't be stingy, use sports shocks.

dont worry my friend , iv made my mind up , I'm gonna get a phill j 40/40 kit there cheap and pretty good. for £140 can ask for much more.

40mm Ventura

Odd - same set-up as the one that worked best for me. Only difference is that i was about 50-70kgs lighter. (The Billies were gas?)

The only reason i dont still run that set-up is because it was too soft for traction requirements.

anyone no whats the best thing to re-paint springs with? iv had a look on various forums and the tinternet and found hammerite underseal. only found it in tin form so it would need to be brushed on which would look shit. Can you get it in spray form?
