Thinking about doing a year in America as part of my degree next year, wondering if it would be feasible to take my Polo over there.

Therefore has anybody had their car shipped to say America or some other far off place, and how much is it roughly?

Probably a daft idea but it would be awesome if I could do it.

the company was very professional, and quite helpful.

Good luck getting it legal when you get there, they have a +25 year old importation rule, with few exceptions such as for diplomats and NATO troops. Not worth it at all.

EDIT: Unless you are then going to deport it back or destroy it after a year; you cannot sell it on, plus if you break down parts will probably be restrictive.

Ah FoleE, now that does put me off. So if I imported it under my Dad's or a relative's name over there that's over 25 what would happen then? I would deport it probably.

cant see parts being that hard to source as the US market have some models quite similar.

why would you want to drive around in a polo over there? it would be the perfect opportunity to drive a V8 and not worry about fuel consumption

as far as i know there is no real problem with getting the car legal there, you are not planning to sell it, as it is your own property etc.

there are extra charges involved, aside from shipping, but they are only a couple of hundred euro in total.

i wanted to do so for a 3 month road trip, from NY to LA, but it was gonna be too expensive for me really..

about 2.500 euro round trip.. i thought to myself "imagine the mods i can get with that much money"

The money you'd spend getting it sent there then back, you could buy yourself a juicy American motor instead.

If you want you car over there for less than 12 months then you don't have to do an modifications to make it compilable with US DoT regulations, as you can do a temp import. You can not sell the car and it has to be removed from the US before the 12 months is up. I believe you have to be in the country before the car arrives.

If you want the car there for longer than that then it has to comply with all DoT Regulations (depending on year).... meaning don't bother.

If your car is over 25 then you can import and keep the car there no problems no changes needed.

Big problem that you will have is insuring the car over there... you think UK insurance is expensive and as they don't have the car a lot of Insurance companies won't touch it as it will be classed as a gray market car.

Its really can be a pain in the arse.. but mine will be there when its 25... well 24!

A year is fine as long as you deport or destroy ( ) it at the end, any longer is not possible, whilst photo whoring I use a lot of US websites and this question is asked a lot and the answer is it's just not possible, recently US authorities have been clamping down on illegally imported Nissan Skylines, ordering them to be destroyed or deported to Canada where the rule is 15 years instead.

Also getting parts for a 1.2L Polo in the states won't be easy as others have suggested, the nearest dealers for them are in Mexico...

Yeah there is the option of selling mine and then getting something over there, I've thought of that, I'm just exploring all possibilities.

Just imagine how cool it'd be to have your Polo there, you won't see another one there, and the size difference will be hilarious.

Actually whilst there is still lots of Suburbans, Dodge Rams, superduty F250s and what not, when you go to the States more recently you notice a lot more smaller cars creeping in, saw loads of Smart cars for example in the Orlando area and drove past the dealership, suprising to say the least

Of course it depends on what uni you may attend but do you actually need a car? Public transport ain't terrible in the larger cities, taxis etc. Don't get me wrong it would be awesome, however it also seems rather a lot of hassle, when the money saved could be spent on touring around in a rented RV or what not seeing the sights

Yeah true but that's Florida isn't it, go to somewhere like where I'm going Atlanta, GA can't see there being many small cars but there could be. California, and places like that, the states that tend to be trendy and you'll find that there's more smaller cars I expect, could be wrong though.

it looks like new, but the styling is definately 90's... itd just confuse people!

and people in the know would love it (people that call their Jettas "vento's"there because they think that it puts other people off will have no idea wtf id be driving)

If i went state side for a year then the polo would be on the first transport after me.

Any breakdowns id just order online and get my parents to post them out.

Was supposed to do a year at a swiss uni and i was going to take the car. but the course arrangers couldnt sort the details out and it fell through, also i dont think the swiss authorities would approve of my polo.
