Hey guys, picked up my first polo yesterday and absolutely LOVE it, only thing is that when i go above around 70-80mph, the clocks or something in the dash starts screaming, its pretty loud. Just wondering if anyone had heard of this and know a solution as its really annoying. When i bang the top of the dash it stops then comes back a few seconds later. But like i said, its only at high speed it does it.

Another thing is the lights, they are really dim when not on full beam, i cant really see the road in front of me, is this just because its an old car or could there be another problem? Full beam is more than fine its just the dipped thats not really doing anything.

The car is a mk2 polo bready 1ltr. Any help would be really appreciated.

check if it has the later h4 lamps...its writen on the lense

if you dont have h4..id suggest you get some , they're cheap via the classifieds...then make a upgraded wiring harness with relays...sounds difficult but its not

that will ensure full power to the bulbs...they can be as bright as any modern halogen equiped car

the screaming...could it be a buzzer? these cars have a warning for low oil pressure

Hey, thanks a lot for the reply, I've just checked what they are now and they are h4 lamps, but they are definitely not as bright as they should be, its got a cd player so maybe thats draining power? Also, may just be me but full be is immensely bright, there is such a difference between the two, maybe too much power is going to full beam or something?

Also just checked the oil level and its fine.

I have no idea, like i said, this is my first polo so am a real beginner with this. Thanks alot for the advice though!

Anyone else got any ideas?

its oil pressure not the level...if its a buzzer that is

right so h4 is a good start , now go buy a upgraded loom or make one and see what a massive differance its making

no i doubt the cd player makes the lights dim...they're all like until you sort the loom, but try turning off the cd player to confirm it

not sure about oil pressure, how would i tell if it was going too high? By the buzzer i suppose. Still not sure if its that though.

As for the lights i just went out and turned the lights on with the cd player on and off and it made no difference to the brightness so i guess that answers that question.

Is that the only guide to upgrading a loom? I've had a quick look and cant really find any others, pics would be good, pics of the circuit is just confusing to me. Is it easier to buy a new one or upgrade the current one?

With the screaming, my Speedometer is making a hell of a racket at the moment which sounds like a sort of screaming noise. It's intermittent though, does not happen at a constant speed. Could be worth looking at the speedo cable.

theres a diagram in the link i posted , or google "headlamp relay" "upgraded headlamp loom" etc to see another diagream that does the same thing

yes its pretty much the only answer for great headlamps ...no bulb upgrades will benefit much because theres a volatage drop

its all explained well in that link...read it a few times until you understand

as for do you buy new or fix what you have ...as the link expalins you need to buy /make a new bit that triggers some relays to direct full power

TBH a 1.0 bready was never made to be going above 70-80mph Why not just slow down a bit?

Its definitely not just the engine, its really bloody loud.

be careful it doesnt explode. is it only with the lights on this loud screaming happens?

Thinking about it now yea i think it is. Hasnt been doing it lately but I've only been driving in the day and when it was happening before yea it was with the lights on. What does that mean?

Hope this video works, might give a bit more insight into the kind of sound it is, doesnt sound loud here but it is.

After playing around a bit i have found that when its making the noise, turning the engine off doesnt make a difference and nor does turning the light of heater or anything electrical off. PLLLLLEEEEAAAASSEE help me! Its soooo annoying.

If the pitch changes with speed it and it doesnt matter if the engine is on or off its probably something to do with your speedo cable.

Take out the clocks and make sure its properly located and not totally worn or something?

bit mysterious! if it is the speedo cable I'm not sure why it would only do it at higher speeds tho :S

Might be your fan for the heaters/blowers. Mine squeals like a bitch if I have it on 2 or 3 and I turn left! Sounds like it's coming from behind the dials and a swift bang on the dash stops it. Worth a look.

Mine screams when I'm on 3 on the fan.. haven't had a look yet but if I find anything I'll let you know.

Thanks alot hatti, dont think it is the heater though, while its been screaming I've turned the heater on and off, up and down and it makes no difference. Sometimes its not just at higher speeds but most of the time it is, very occasionally i get it at town speed when i hit a big bump.

Is it just a case of taking the dash off and the clocks apart to get to the speedo cable?

It sounds a lot like my speedo cable.

Just unscrew the two screws that hold the surround on and pull it out, then youll see the screws holding the clocks in, undo and get your hand round the back and see if you can push the speedo cable in any further and check for play

my 92 coupe does this, i thought it was the speedo cable/drive on way out. its actually the surround around ign barrel and on top of colum. Its vibrating off something. Discovered it by pressing bits of dash and surrounds

bit of an update, unfortunately not a good one. Had the clocks out yesterday and checked the speedo cable, all seemed fine, nothing majorly wrong anyway. Its getting rediculous now, started doing it at 30-40mph. Driving me crazy.

i might try driving with the speedo cable unplugged to see if thats the problem. This wont bugger anything up will it?

cant really do a visual check on a sealed cable can you....might be rusty /frayed inside

yea good call, ill take it out tonight and see what its like on the way to work, at least we can rule it out if it still does it, and i guess if it stops just replace the speedo cable. Cheers guys!
