When i bought my 51 plate Gti a few months ago i noticed on drive home my drivers side door speaker didnt work, so far I've lived with it,but tried to sort it the other day,thought perhaps wire was broken across door opening but look ok,i see its a push in plug type fitting which was a bloody nightmare to undo. so far i haven't removed door panel as that dont look like a 5 minute job,anyone got an idea where prob might be,anyone had same problem before.

Remove the door panel.

Takes 2 mins.

2 screws behind the grab handle which prises off, and another on the inside of the door just by the side of the tweeter cover.

Unscrew the speaker, and check the connections at the back of it and make sure they are in properly, and then also check the wiring and see if it is all connected up.

Is the drivers side tweeter working? Or is that also dead. The tweeter is behind the grey triangle thing near the wing mirror.

If the whole of that side isn't working then it could be the wiring from the headunit.

You don't need to take the whole door panel off to get to the speaker. You can use a small flat head screwdriver to unclip the speaker cover and then unscrew the speaker.

But as indy said above, if the entire right side isn't working it's probably the headunit wiring or the headunit itself. When I bought my Polo it had a stock radio player and the right side would keep going on and off, I thought it was the speaker at first but later discovered if I push the headunit around it works. I got a new headunit and never had a problem since.

It's best to take the door panel off though. Wouldn't want to break those clips!

I have the same problem in that my right side speakers will randomly swtich off and come on again at higher volume, but I'm hoping it's wiring or an amp issue, not the headunit as it cost a bomb!

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your speakers? I'm having the same problems. tried testing the power coming from both the head unit and in the doors and there's 12vs and it's not the unit as i've replaced it and tried another, so i'm puzzled??? Also, it's not the speakers as i've tried different ones.

I don't know what the problem could be....any suggestions?

Mine does it also, drivers side. Every time i get in its off but i give the door a slam and it crackles back into life

I don't know how you checked for 12v but it's certainly not the speaker wires you've tested. How can a varying signal from the audio unit be transmitted as a solid 12v source?

I've heard of this a few times, just check the wires going from the car to the door. Open the door and pull back the rubber that goes from the door to the car. You'll see a bunch of wires. Usually in the middle, the wires split. This would be my first check..

Thanks Adam. I have used a volt meter to check the power coming from the ISO blocks in the back of the head unit and also in the doors and they come up around 5v or something like that with the head unit on. I can't see any breaks in the wire....it's a mystery to me. I have changed head units and speakers. Like I say there seems to be power in the doors wires (tweeter and cone) so it's puzzling. I might have another look tomorrow when it's not pouring down.

With the door card off, check connectivity between the ISO block and the first speaker wire in the door. (Pull all connections off headunit and the speakers, so it's just the local wires).

If you read the back of the headunit, it should give you a rough indication of what wire it should be. Once you're sure you've got/not got connectivity between the ISO end and the speaker end, check the other one.

Chances are ONE of the wires is broken, but NOT both. Once you've got the dodgy wire, start looking alone that line of cable.
