I have a 6n polo that i am tying to make into a fast road/track car.

I started by stripping everything apart from the dashboard.

I set to work with the flourescent yellow paint =]

Then cut a mesh grille, painted it black and whacked it in.

I made a straight through side exit exhaust with bits of exhaust from a scrappy.

it spits flames and sounds incredible! bit loud inside the car mind, long journeys get a bit headachey!

More to come soon, Next thing on the list is some suspension, its incredible soft and wallowy.

Then a 16v 1.6 engine and some brakes.

Its a 1.4 8v =[ (pics up soon) not the quickest car in the world but its about 10 seconds to sixty, its hard to film the left hand side of the car when I'm driving =] but i'll see what i can do one night.

You can save a few kilo's if you pull the dashboard out and remove the sound insulating layer that's attached to the bulkhead (there's a fabric type layer in the engine bay to do the same thing). I found the sound deadening on the floor comes off with a bit of heat (hot air/paint stripper gun) and a gasket scraper tool, you can remove the residue with cellulose thinners or meths (thinners is better, meths isn't as aggressive in dissolving it!)

What? the 1.4 16v does it in around 10 seconds, and that's 40bhp up on the 8v...

Loving this thread mate :). Seems to me that your a bit of a dab hand DIY fabricater which has always been a top skill imo, rather than just buying parts. Agree with what's been said though, let's see a video of the flames mate :p.

10 seconds? the book says 14.4...if my 6n was that quick id be able to keep up with my mates. I doubt stripping it all out will make it that much quicker with a slow engine in.

It was about 14 seconds standard, but I've taken god knows how much weight out, theres a cold air feed induction kit and the spark timing has been advanced =]

You'd be surprised, weight is a killer and any you shed makes a huge difference.

shouldnt be a prob, mate of mine put his old s13 through an mot with all the clocks/switches cable tied on where ever possible

Sorry but removing carpet, doorcards and rear bench, and a cold air feed, isnt going to compensate for 40bhp.

Cold air feed and straight through exhaust is probs going to help more than the 'weight loss'. but i reckon it shaved off about 2 seconds from your 0-60, maximum.

I'm guessing 10 seconds was just a general guess?

Anyway, fuck that - you still need to make it handle!

Plus if you are actually wanting to have this car MOT'd every year, isn't the straight through exhaust with no CAT going to fuck you over big style?

the decat will yes, but with no dash all u need to do is secure the cables, make sure everything is still accurate and safe. then the MOT will be ok in that respect.

i say 1.6 gti engine. but i could be wrong but the polo salloon is a golf subframe. which u can get an abf or even a vr in one? not sure what u need to change over though.

u will have alot more fun with the abf over the gti engine...but then u got probs with the exhaust manifold poss hitting steering rack right? either way good luck.

forgot to mention, had the gear ratios changed in the box, made a bit of a difference, and the 10 seconds isnt an exact figure, its deffinatley sub 11.

bodyworks staying as is i think, as for traction; thinkin some 14s on some grippy rubber will do nicely, in desperate need of some suspension, it rolls through bends like you wouldnt believe!

with the MOT I'm planning on just buying a whole standard polo exhaust from a scrappy and fitting it for the mot.

tidy mate, sounds like u got some good ideas.. are you going to stick a cage in it? i know there is a guy building a rally polo on here - i guess they would be similar in many respects

If you want to go for sticky rubber I would suggest picking up some 15x7 rims. This will allow you to run 195 50 R15 Toyo R888's and other such semi slicks in the cheapest size as this is the most common size available. It'll also allow you room to put in some bigger brakes.

For wets I've heard that Uniroyal Rainsport 2's are very very good although I haven't tried them myself yet.

i got mine made by him, and it fits like a glove.

comes with all paper work, and nuts and bolts.
