deeper/chunkier tread normally also have a higher silicone content in the tread which prevents it hardening at lower temperatures and gives better grip in cold, wet conditions you can get spiked/studded ones but we dont get enough snow for that here really.

In some EU countries they are a legal requirement but none apply to the UK currently.

Winter tires are also designed differently to clear the tread of snow as you drive, normal tires can clog with snow, leaving you with effectivly no tread.

Winter tyres, as well as having a deep wide snow-specific tread, have very small fine wavy tread cut on top, to provide extra grip on snow and ice.

i wouldnt bother with studded tyres in this country thought, but winter tyres would be good if it snows like last year :)

Yes, just use your ordinary rims or winter wheels and use the same tyre size but find a winter tyre for them!

Aye. Though most of us in these other countries have two sets of rims for this occasion. Summer rims that are big, and winter ones that are small and you don't care about damage to the rim from shit thrown on the road. The smaller tyres are also better for winter conditions as they can cut into the snow better than fatter tyres and gets to much needed tarmac sooner.

The only couple of times I had the shot to do that I was too drunk to see. I like the snow for other reasons.

in all honesty mate dont bother! if i got tires specifically for winter it would be so i could still drive fast! or you get a winter set of wheels coz u dont want to damage your nice show wheels! but its an unnecessary thing to spend your money on! just do what 99% of road users do in winter and drive a little slower! and when it snows ul slide anyway! its fun!

...and if he slide directly in big, bad truck? or if he wants to go uphill and he ends in a some fence or something cause he is driving with ''summer'' tires....THE WORSE WINTER TIRE IS BETTER FOR THE SNOW THAN THE BEST SUMMER TIRE!!!!

last winter i went uphill with no problem with FIAT CINQUECENTO which has 29bhp from 2 cylinders, beating BMWs and similar cars. I only had cheep winter tires.

As if you'd get winter tyres specifically for winter. Who the hell does that.

Fair enough winter wheels to protect your shiney content, but winter tyres is a bit extreme.

you HAVE to do it in germany

as said there better adapted for use in snow and colder conditions.

They have little nobbly bits on as well.

Problem is come summer they wear faster so there not really all year round tyres. Not cheap either.

If you have a accident in germany without winter tyres on, Your insurance is invalid.
