Anyone know anything about these? easy to fit etc ? is a fitting kit needed? looking at a vw/audi 256mm conversion then spotted a pair of these

yes I have them on mine. you need the kit designed for a mk1 golf gti from rally design. Comes in at around £500. If you just buy the calipers on their own then they wont fit, they need brackets. I've had mine for a few years now and rate them very highly, here is a recentish photo:

a set of midilights which is what comes in the kit is £320.85 for a pair inc vat.

be aware though, while they are intended to be a bolt-on conversion there's a couple of things you need to do to make them fit a polo. Firstly you have to grind off a small amount of metal from the suspension strut so the caliper adaptor fits. It's pretty obvious what needs doing when you have the thing in front of you, it doesn't take long to do. Then the standard mk3 polo brake hoses will be too short. I made a small solid line adaptor from the caliper to a fixed bracket since I already had a set of pretty much brand new polo braided hoses, the easier solution is to just buy some longer golf hoses.

Is there any cheaper ways to improve the brakes on a G40. I want to get mine back on the road very soon + MOT but it always seems to struggle on the brakes. I current have a standard setup with braided hoses. The system gets bled but does'nt seem to make much difference. I've seen people mention a 22mm master cylinder is that a mod from another VW?

^^ you could refurb or renew the calipers, fit braided lines, sports pads (mintex do some very good fast road ones) and some fresh brake fluid. makes a hell of a difference

using 256mm discs with calipers & carriers off a mid80s audi or certain vauxhalls is cheaper, do a search there's loads of threads about it.

i find new rear shoes properly adjusted makes loooooads of difference

indeed! people often neglect to do anything with the rear brakes but if they are poorly maintained and not adjusted then they'll stop the front brakes from being able to work properly.
