I'm gonna have a go at sorting the patches of surface rust on my sills and rear arches this weekend. I've been looking at Bilt Hamber stuff and POR 15. Is there either of the two that people would recommend over the other?

I was thinking of getting the POR15 starter kit, but am not sure if there would be enough in there.

Bilt Hamber Stuff:

Surfex HD

Deox-Gel

POR15 Stuff:

Marine Clean

Metal Ready

POR15

Have I got the process right too?

Grind down with wire brush drill attachment

Degrease surface

Treat with Bilt Hamber Deox-Gel

Wrap in cling film and leave for 4-6 hours

Brush off the Bilt Hamber Deox-Gel

Fill any pitting

Zinc primer

Paint

POR15:

Grind down with wire brush drill attachment

Degrease surface with Marine Clean

Treat with Metal Ready

Paint on POR15

Zinc Primer

Paint

Apparently these don't work tbh your best bet is to take the paint off round the area and then wire brush the affected areas or sandpaper, any pits get some drill bit grinding stones (can get em from halfords) then get some p40 and p38 isopon filler and fibreglass paste, use the fibre glass paste to bride any tiny holes you make whilst using the stones! Fill and paint!

Cheers, where can I get the P40 and P38 from? I've never used filler before, so it could be interesting

I was going to peel the paint off of the surrounding area until I hit clean metal again, then go over it with the wire brush attachment. Is this right?

the bilt hamber detox gel will take days to shift any reasonble amount of rust...not 4 hours( and it doesnt work at winter temps )

you wouldnt zinc prime over por15 , as the zinc wont be touching the metal

I've bought some epoxy mastic after being disapointed with the por /bilt ....wire brush it best you can and 2 coats of epoxy matic , then paint if you wish...google it , theres no bad about it online

Halfords mate! Just read the instructions well and don't make up to much or you will waste it, also don't put too much on or you'll be sanding it back flush for ages! Lol

Cheers guys. I'll have a read around. I suppose filler can always be sanded back if I mess it up lol. Someone else recommended grinding down, treating with kurust, and then painting POR15 over it, before a topcoat.

I rate that POR15 Metal Ready stuff from Frost. I tend to use it on metal once I've removed all the rust with a grinder etc... in order to make sure the metal is good and clean. I also find it useful for prepping metal before welding too. It's nasty stuff though, use in a well ventilated area!

The metal ready stuff you leave on an area of metal for ten mins or so, then wash it off with soapy water, you don't actually leave it on. Then paint with POR15 anti rust paint and you can paint over this if you want to. If it's under the car then I tent to just paint underseal over it.

For heavy stuff like sills, get a wire brush in the grinder, go over the whole area and get it shiney. Yeah, encapsulators like POR15 work, but there's no substitute for making sure all the rust's gone before you start.

if you chose por15...use the whole system exactly as they say on the package , if you skips steps or paint it over kurust etc it will peel off like nobodys buisness

when used 110% as they direct you , its pretty good ...you cant just slap it on like hammerite though

if its sills a twisted knot wire wheel ina grinder get it back shiney, chuck some hammerite kurust on the pitted areas and leave it to go black, a coating of zinc or etch primer then some filler, sand and prime and paint as normal
