Driving to work on wednesday, happy as larry when all of a sudden...the car dies, no warning nothing just stops.

So I get to the side of the road, get out and find a little surprise in the engine bay

Timing belt has snapped :( just see the end of it dangling there.

Damage can be seen in the next two pictures below, 8 valves properly bent with the others suffering from some contact from a piston i believe.

This is the end of the belt, broke off so cleanly its crazy.

I'll keep this thread updated as I rebuild another head ready to be put on and have it all put together, just as a reminder to people to get your timing belts changed!!!

If you don't this thread will show you the ball ache you have to go through to get your car running again.

Jessus those valves are properly bent!

when i brought my car the previous owner had the timing belt changed 2 months before, had an invoice to prove it too...

4 months later the tensioner came loose and it was engine rebuild time :(

so a warning to everybody, even if the belt has been changed on a newly purchased car, get it changed yourself for your own reassurance

Yeah thats what happens when your belt snaps at 60mph haha.

Think I've got everything I need to rebuild it once I get your stuff Scott. Haven't picked up the rotor arm and dizzy cap yet. Thanks for all your help though Scott.

Everything is cleaned up and ready to go back on the car now though, got up early this morning and got hard to it haha.

So I'm hoping by next weekend it will be running again.

Thats what happened to mine about 6 weeks before I bought it. But as far as the previous owner told me - 2 valve heads broke off and managed to hole 2 of the pistons! Oh and his wife did it right with 16 bent valves and a scored block too!

I'd be slinging a new engine in, couple of those pistons look like the damage from the valves will be scoring the bore. Not good!

Bores are fine, spun the crank round a few times and there is no resistance and no scoring has appeared, all the valves have done is clean some carbon deposits off the piston faces.

you really dont have much look with your valvers do you mate...at least youve got the know how to fix this yourself

To my knackered old eyes it looked like the valves had pushed the edges of the cut out out wards, think I need to go to specsavers, ha ha.

feck thats no good steven, after you getting it all running nice and happy again. gutting.

Update guys...almost done now.

Hard work though, what a ball ache it is taking the engine mount off to get the belt in place, got it done though.

Timing belt on and timed up correctly...wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be getting it timed up.

The pain in the arse tensioner, good design but its a bit of a bastard to get right.

Thats it for now, spun the engine round by hand a few times, seems to be perfect.

Won't get it running till tomorrow so fingers crossed :)
