progress had a spare 10 mins so i got the rest of it welded

just needs the welds sanding back and then its filler/fiberglass time!!!

Thought so! Cheers! Do I need to use plastic filler? Will it last longer? Been told the plastic filler will move with the bumper? Or will regular p40 (or is it p38) filler work just as good

yeah its p38. p40 is the fibre glass stuff.

they will both be more or less the same. imo use the p38 cos its meant for body work.

ok so i have recently done a really thin skim of p40 the other day and sanded it back and applied filler today so next step is the fun sanding part!!! yeyy!!! (not) but....... whilst waiting for it to set I've been bored so i decided to read up on plastic welding etc, and quite a few people say do not use p38 and p40, because p40 has no bonding properties to plastics, and will eventually seperate from the plastic, and p38 isnt flexible enough and will crack i no loads people who have use p38 on bumpers that y i thought it would be alright?? any truth??

i was thinking filler is acceptable on parts that do flex like sills etc? y not on a bumper that doesnt really flex? after all I'm not driving dodgems!

Everyone i know who has done it has used P40 and P38 and have had no problems. As long as you formed a strong weld you shouldnt have any problems. I assume maybe these people may have used to much filler hence why its cracked. I banged mine quite a bit to make sure it was solid and ready for the job before it goes to paint and it seemed ok. And remember the only impact it will really take is if you crash or if someone comes and kicks it. IMO you have nothing to worry about.

i think i have bollocksed it up i came home last night (gf bday) hammered and started sanding the hell out of it and its lumpy as hell i woke up remembering i had done an ace job but then i went to look and i think I've fucked it tbh lol! I've actually sanded thru the filler and fiberglass and taken patches of the plastic away! should i just start again??

no need, simply start t build it up again gradually

are you using something flat and even with the sandpaper on it when rubbing?

try and build it up again and get it as even and flat as possible, then give it about 3 coats of high build primer, then rub it all down (i always do this wet, takes longer but its better) once its rubbed dow re prime it with the same primer again 3 coats and rub down again, by re priming you are making it mre even and flate and are more likey to have a better finish, i always do this when smthing any panels for mysef or customers

I don't think id have the skills to do that but I'll sure as hell give it ago, it was so easy and was going so well untill I woke up this morning hahaha I'm not too fused coz the bumpers were free but I feel like a right knob for even thinkin I was this amazing body worker person when I was smashed hahaha if all else fails I'll start again it is a learning curve after all it's my virgin project lol

Going back to the plate holder, my mate (dom604) ran his plate on a bracket he made. It was a piece of metal the size of the plate, with 2 bits pointing upwards to line up with the screw holes which hold the centre grill in. However, this was on a 16v bumper, so I'm not sure about 8v sorry

Hiya mate, where did you get the plastic the same shape as the recess to "weld" in? I've tried smoothing mine and it looks awful because i dont have the bit of an edge still there.

got it from a rear 8v bumper measure the plate recess then find the center of the rear bumper, then measure and mark up the plate recess on the rear bumper, (centre of rear bumper should be centre of the plate recess) then you need to cut it out and offer it up to the recess then trim the edges off so it just sits lower than the rest of the front bumper (i made this mistake first off) then weld then smooth that sucker out!
