Hey people

been out all night and parked up, opened the bonnet up to show my friend my air horns and went to start it again, try put it into gear and it physically wont go, turn it off, then it'll go into gear fine.

i pumped the clutch etc, and after 10 mins it starting going into gear but i had to really fight it, gear 3 and 4 aren't too bad but 1 + 2 are awful

any ideas?

Check your gear box oil for starters.

sounds like it might be the clutch if it'll go in gear with the engine off.

does it grind when you try and put it into gear while its running? if so it could be your clutch.

or is it more of a case of it just won't go into gear, as in you push the lever up to where 1st should be but it just won't go up or its really tight when it does go in? if that's the case then its probably your gearbox is shafted although its worth checking your gearbox oil level as well. mine started doing this on my jetta the other week after a long drive, checked the oil and it was real low so topped it up, been fine since.

Don't spose it was whining at all before it went? Could be release bearing or pressure plate. Either way I don't think it sounds like a gearbox problem. Are you able to put it into gear when the engines not running?

Mine did this, was the release bearing. It was jumping out of gear too.

New clutch fixed it though.

Yup it'll be your clutch mate. Should be about 60 quid for a new clutch kit. However, a friend of mine just got a brand new clutch fitted with a 20,000 mile warranty for 99 quid the other day at 'Mr Clutch' for her Mk2 golf. For that price i wouldn't even bother doing it myself! See if there's one near you and give them a call.
