Oh and to the originator of the thread, providing the price of fuel is around £1.05 your getting about 38mpg, so your car isn't broken haha, but again its very hard to tell mpg without briming the tank, drive 100 or so miles then brim it again.

its got a scorpion mid and backbox exhaust and a K&N so i gues that will bring it down.. only used to get around 30-35mpg out of my old 1.0L 6n

My valver (when it works)

Has a BMC, a 4-2-1 stainless manifold, de-cat, single box stainless system, gets driven hard and still gets me at least 40ish mpg!!!

Exhaust and air filter mods shouldn't really take economy down, unless you are nailing it everywhere in second because you like the noise.

Lol, fair enough, i think the 8v's are only ment to 39 or something anyway, so that would be driving carefuly with no mods..

and i do tend to nail it a bit.. :)

Still terrible economy though.

My BMW 318is gets nailed everywhere and gets 30mpg...thats a heavy 1.8!!!

not that i complain about my fuel consumption but it would be nice having one of these cars you lot talk about lol getting like 50mpg would be amazing lol i tend to rev my car through to about 3500 4000 rpm unless overtaking then i might bounce off the line :\ hehe who doesnt lol

You could have one of these 50mpg cars...just depends on so many things.

How you drive? (I don't mean granny driving just smoothness)

Where you drive? (is it motorway? Town? Just a mile a day to the shops?)

How healthy is your car? (A dodgy sensor can really harm your mpg, plug in a VAGCOM to find any fault codes)

Do you carry extra weight in the car? (A boot full of crap will cost you mpg)

All these can mean the difference between 30mpg and 50mpg.

VW quote 45 to the gallon but i'm only getting 34mpg from my 1.4 8v 6n2, reckon I should be getting more. Just replacing stuff at the minute to try and bring it up

true^^^ i am smooth how i drive if i plan on overtaking someone i aint one of those tailgaiters stamping on and off accelerator like my mates i tend to drop back so i can see if its clear and then put the foot down :) i brake stupidly early for anything slowing down gradually lol also dont know what vagcom is lol where to get it i have no idea haha... and its in town mostly unless i go blackpool but then still use like 25 litres for 140 miles :\ motorway... i suppose i have a sub and instead of space saver wheel i have a steelie in my boot :\

Could be part of your problem...the key to economy is to never ever brake!

Braking itself uses no fuel but you then have to use fuel to speed up again, whereas if you just hang back, and keep a constant speed you would use less fuel overall.

VAGCOM is a diagnostic computer, it would tell you of any defective sensors on your car.

I've got a 318is, a 140bhp 180torques 1.9 16v with 1300kg to pull and gets better economy than a lot of polos on here on a motorway run i can have 90- 100 miles of fairly quick driving [90mph+] in the fast lane, but feathering the throttle and maintaining the speed

will get 75-80 miles out of a tenner if I'm caining it out of the city centre

in the city centre combined with impatient city driving i'll be lucky to get 50 miles out of the same tenner

450 miles of combined driving to a brimmed tank. thats why I've stuck with it so long now lol

I'll get about 400 miles out of my 318is but mine hates city driving.

Out on the open round though the mpg gauge says its doing 50mpg at 90mph haha.

My track car manages over 35mpg if I drive it reasonably sensibly. On track though it does about 10mpg, used £90 on the last day at Silverstone!!!!!!

hahaha dont worry mate, i did'nt mean it in a bad way to you, its just mpg is such a hard thing for people to understand and judge

As heartagram said thats the only way to measure it, anyone who says "i got XXX from £10 of fuel" it can not be accurate

i thought hard braking increases fuel consumption?? anyway where do i have a bash on one of these diagnostic computers??? id like to find out whats wrong with it lol it seriously does about 32mpg... not as bad as my 1.2 8v corsa that did 20-25mpg :\ haha not good

Like i said braking uses no fuel at all...its the speeding up after. When you accelerate in a car you mpg is very very low like in single figures...this takes your average mpg down alot.

So say over 1 mile you stay at exactly 60mph you'll do something like 60mpg, but in the next mile you brake from 60 down to 20 then speed back up to 60 again, your mpg will drop to something like 30.

ahhh this makes sense :\ never thought of it like that lol... ill see if i go on a full blown eco mission see what i get to gallon then haha... what about this diagnostics thingy then where can i get one or get it checked?

top gear said it lol thats where i heard it from but it never did make sense in my head :S its like if you are going 60mph in 5th ull be doing around 2700rpm wouldnt youre engine be using alot more petrol to keep it running at that speed??

I think its because you are using the motion of the car to keep the engine turning over not realy sure tho. i do alot of acelerating and braking because i have to brake for every speedbump :/ id travel everywhere at 5-10mph if i didnt acelerate and brake lol. i get around 200 miles from £40 at the mo.

and I've got 2 heavy subs in the boot :)

A couple of weeks ago my car got infinite MPG going from Bath to Trowbridge. Powered by a Diesel tow truck and a nice man called Steve.

tenner gets me around 100 miles hurra

I get 45 mpg too, yet again I prove Saxos are better than Polos

i'm lucky if i get 45 miles on £10.

on a full tank (50 litres) i get about 220 miles... on optimax/v-power.

the momentum of the car keeps the engine turning at this speed. pretty simple lads come on!
