How Has Everyone Got Such Good Mechanical Knowledge, All Through Experience Or What?

I'm bloody useless with mechanics too though

I just have a great love for cars, and it seems that about 90% of information I pick up relating to cars sticks in my head better than any other subject I ever try and learn/research.

And mechanical knowledge is all through experiance and just going for it. Research a job, get the correct equipment and just have the balls to go fo it.

i owned a mk3 polo for a year and half.....in that time i did all my own maintenance (with some assistance) but its how you learn..

Reading stuff on here too though. and hayesey - he's rammed full of useless polo facts

Dude, thats like asking hows everyone so clued on maths, people teach and preach.

People learn, others are just good at it :)

Studied anything car related since i was 3, started mechanics on dirt bikes and scooters at 15/16..

Went to college for a year and a half doing mechanics..

Taught myself since, i read loads though, like just wikipedia pages on anything i can find.. engines, turbo's, rotary engines etc etc...

My main thing is computers, but cars interest me in the same way. I want to know how things work, its that simple. I learn from reading on the forums, asking questions, reading Haynes, playing around with things on my car. I've never had any "formal" training or anything, just a hobbyist.

this is just like me, if you tell me to do something...5 mins later i will forget it. but i will remember everything involving cars.

but everything i know (which is not much, but i still know alot more than the average normal person) is by listening to people talk, reading forums...from watching Ed China fix em up and tht mark evans (both on discovery turbo)

i guess by learning as you go along - things break and need fixing, and if you can do it yaself its a hell of a lot more satisfying than paying someone :) PLUS you know you'l look after your car! :) x

i mostly dabble in aircooled stuff, but they are really easy to work on. i just do all my own cars and help out at my mates garage

I've no idea about mechanics, what i do know a lot about is maths, science and electrical which can be applied to a lot of things: wheel/tyre sizes/offsets obviously electrical things amongst others.

I also know how to use google & how to search forums, which is a skill that would answer 70% of the questions on here

i grew up on a shitty council estate, so when i was growing up there was a burnt out moped on nearly every street corner, i just used to drag them home a piss about with them, taking them apart and seeing how they worked, by the time i was 11 i could rebuild the engine on my puch maxi

cars were just a natural progression, most of the stuff i know is through just getting stuck in and seeing what happens. must admit tho since i've found the internet and the information on it i've progressed a shit load more, actually having an idea about what your supposed to be doing before you start hitting it with a hammer helps no end

I can only do stuff with assistance atm. but I'm jobless out of college etc, so I'm going for the option of get on an E2E course in motor vehicle and learn the basics. Worthwhile!

but then there would be no need for the tech sections, just a link to google, besides i think that people prefer to get information from people that they know (albeit through a forum) and probably trust a lot more than some randomer on some random site that they have never been on before... mind you that site probably wouldn't have a tech section either, just another link to google

Ha ye you know what I mean though, the endless "can I fit 15s on my 6n" and "what does et mean" type questions

Loved tinkering with anything mechanical as a kid,was always into cars and trucks,then helped a mate fix auctioned heaps in my early teens and worked full time repairing crashed cars for a coachbuilders when i was 16.

Went on to work for VAG and bought and sold cars as a trader in my own time. Since became an electrician,moved onto hydraulics and other aspects of mechanical industry and went onto industrial maintenance and engineering - but still like to play with cars despite the direction they're going in.
