Taught myself pretty much everything i know up until 2 months ago when i got myself a job in a VAG specilist garage an

Had no exsperience with cars until i was 16 when i bought a mini that was a shed (a stripped down shed in the garage now) so had to start learning how to fix bits, weld, rebuild stuff, as with no job and no desire to get one i couldn't afford to pay someone else to do it

bought another Mini that had tax n test which needed welding again but less, kept breaking it in various ways, changed a head gasket one evening because i was bored and i didn't know when it was last done, quick look in a haynes manual and half hour later the head was off :-D that mini died so i got a MG Metro cheap (and it was shit) broker the engine so swapped it out for a spare mini engine then scrapped the car when i bought my beetle, which was a a pretty big project...

Its all the little jobs, changing plugs, leads stuff like that that'l give you confidence to do bigger jobs.

self taught mainly restored a bettle into a baja bug for my first car

learned a lot from that then started panelbeating as a living been doing it

23 years now picked up a lot over the years but you never stop finding out

new things :)

I'm no expert but I'm confident I can do anything on my own car without taking it to a garage. MOT time is the only time a car of mine is touched by someone in a garage! Just working on getting a decent laptop based diagnostics setup, and hopefully be able to do a few homers with it too!

Been working on cars since i was around 8 with my dad, had my 1st car at the age of 13 (a lowered '65 beetle) lol. Then went on to do a three year apprentiship with Volkswagen and Audi, been a qualified GNVQ level 3 technician for 4 years now, and in the motor trade for a total of 7.

Basicly grown up with cars.

I know loads of weird and wonderful facts about cars. I have been into cars since I was 3 - I always had car magazines to read and know loads of things on paper. I know how things work. But I've never really got down and dirty that much. I can fit suspension, change the discs and pads, change the oil and filter, spark plugs, air filters, induction kits, make up brackets and parts to adapt parts. (I'm also pretty good with audio!) But when things get too much for me i'm not embarrased to ask someone else to do it for me. (just ask 13kpoloGT how many times i've had him do stuff for me!)

simple just buy some tools and every job that needs doing get a haynes for your car and give it a shot!! you'll soon get the jist or end up scrapping your car! lol but like i say experience cannot be taught it either happens or wont youll learn which

How Has Everyone Got Such Good Mechanical Knowledge, All Through Experience Or What?

I am the youngest in my family and i have a dad who loves cars and also 7 bros and 1 sis to go along with that too. So every bit of knowledge they have i pretty much pick up and learn from there mistakes.

I have been working or watching a family member since i could walk.lol No kids programmes for me as a child. They would be watching something to do with cars and i would sit and learn it.

Am now 17 and onto my second car. Had my BMW when i was 16 and done all the work on it. I've resorted 3 cars and endless other damage repairable's from a very young age.

So as everyone has said you basically research what u need at the time and it will stick with u aslong as u tackle it urself. :)
