The daily derv focus

After finally clearing myself of a knackered mk4 golf i decided to go diesel (doing about 180 miles a week mainly motorway for work)

Well budget ment I was lookin <=2k so a PD mk4 was out of the question and a decent polo 6n2 tdi would be a lucky find. This also was the case for boras, seats or anything VAG

So I gave in after a while and purchased my first none VAG car in a while, previous cars being Golfs mk4,mk3,mk2 and a beetle.

I'm pretty pleased with it, its the TDCI 115 Zetec version so fairly nippy and getting 50mpg  :-) nice on the pocket!

I know theres a fair few ford haters here who will moan "why didnt you get a dub, err its crap build quality" To be honest, it really doesnt seem bad! Much better then the MK4 Golf ...If i had the budget the dub would of been first choice but wasn't to be.....

maybe next year after i graduate

not bad cars at all mate, my mate had one that i used to borrow a fair bit. nice to drive, solid and pulled well, handle well too for a newer car.

fuck the ford haters, they've probably never even driven one, its just the scene thing to hate any thing but vag

Can't go wrong at that. Just watch for rust at the rear of the sills and round the rear arches in a couple of years.

Beware dodgy clutches though as these have a dual mass flywheel that normally checks out when the clutch does. It can be replaced with a far more reliable single mass for far less then a replacement dual mass.

thanks guys, need to get some decent pics still just been nothing but shite weather recently. Clear side repeaters also on the list & wouldnt mind some st170 wheels & change of springs so lil lower.

Look pretty sweet with few lil changes like these ones-

I love focus'! I'm saving up for a st170 like the one above!

The pic is standard st170 with a lil drop isn't it?

Edit: just noticed the headlights are different!

I'm pretty sure yea, I opted for the TDCI as insurance much kinder and 50+ mpg 8-)

Its the 115bhp model so decent remaps see around 150bhp from what I've been reading, so if i ever feel need to speed then its always an option.

Very temped to make it a lil st170 looker, just change fogs wheels and can change springs for 40mm drop & some clear side repeaters. Still a good reliable cheap to run daily and looks the part too.

Think ill go for a little drive get some decent photos of it today as only have ones above which are blurry as feck! So far very pleased tho done nearly 1300 miles in it, so smooth on motorway compared to the mk4 golf. And a bargin at 2k for an late 03 with full history etc

true - the first thing that popped into my head was fanny - but thats a once every 30second thought anyway

Why has this thread been rated 1*?

I think it looks a decent car, I like your plans to make it look like a 170, you get the best of both worlds, since i don't think interior wise the 170 are that special.

The only thing i found nice about them was the sound they made, but then again i never got to drive it over 10MPH

Diesel wont be sounding great  altho its hardly very noisy atm.

Nicest thing interiour wise wouuld be find some heater leathers from a ghia.

And yup its all about the FNY bobby

Also found this shot while browsing some forums lol

Had some issues with insurance so now finally on my own policy and building no claims (have had 2yrs on my own policy in past but not earned a no claims bonus due to being on classic insurance)

Took a decent quality pic finally!

Exactly the same car as mine mate, i've got the 1.8tdci zetec in grey(113bhp- think the sports are 115bhp, i may be wrong, hardly any difference lol but be careful when ordering a remap etc.). I had a 6n2 before so obviously wanted to upgrade to a Golf, but for the equivilent BHP/spec/age, the focus just ticked all the boxes and with me only been 18, the insurance saving was unreal compared to a Golf.

Everyone of my mates was like why a Diesel, there shit. OK, we'll see how your 1.4 206's air filter likes choking fumes, when i'm getting the same MPG at 100, as when your doing 56mph hahaha!

Great car! Keep the pictures posted!

The sport and tdci none sports are exact same, same engine aswell just sport was 3door and had the trim levels of a st170.

2bhp difference isnt enough for them to call it a none 115  its like a 998cc is normal called a 1litre

And yes money wise its awesome! Saved a few thousand over an equivlent golf and few hundred on insurance (fact a less powered tdi golf is 2insurance groups higher)

Nothing wrong with diesel, pulling power and economy :-)

Exactly, the Focus is a great shout!

Went to have a look at it with my Dad at the garage, decided it liked it and so had to have Mums approval to (LOL!), assured her it was perfect for what i wanted and i wouldn't spend any money on it ;) Drove it home, within 30mins i'd ordered clear side indicators, aero wipers and a rear wiper (the clear indicators make such a difference as does the 'aero' rear wiper- makes it look so so much newer its amazing for like £15).

I fancy some ST170 wheels too, but if you're going to do the job, you have to do it properly aren't you so it would of got out of hand really with suspension, foggys etc.

Do you go on any Ford forums? I had a quick look around and the general concensus is that unless you've got a Escort Cosworth or Cosworth powered car, you just get ignored or laughed at, which is why i still come on here, brilliant forum TBF! :)

Theres a few forums

FFOC - http://ffoc.co.uk/ Altho very little on there if for normal members

American site but some very good stuff on it- http://www.focaljet.com/

ST170 wheels can be picked up ok price on ebay if keep an eye out, shocked the fogs alone are like £100+

I'm going to order some clear sides soon, can get the lowered springs about £140 a set and the st lower grill for about £25-30 off ebay

 Nope apart from a new stero i've not touched it but put about 5k on it its now near 120k and going strong.

Having kept a lookout for ST170 wheels I'm shocked how few there are around pre-owned and always really expensive (was hoping to find some cheap ones and recondition them)

Recently changed jobs so gone from doing 170miles a week for work to about 30  sooo very tempted to change for a smaller car with a little more power but insurance means no GTi for me

Thinking of a 03/04 Seat Ibiza TDI sport 130bhp (plus the remap ability of VAG diesels is great as I'm sure alot here know) also it has alot more torque then the focus weights less and of course

VAG

Abit nicer looking then the focus too (not that the focus is ugly)

Manders.jpg

I also like the fairly plain interiour but think the vents are funky (seen one with them all painted bright orange the other day was rather cool)

FR_14.jpg

IMO, I would leave it standard and just drive it. obviously your enjoying saving money with the good mpg why waste it on indicators etc? i think you have done well to find a 53 plate for less than 2k and you should easily be able to get that back when you come to sell it if its still as nice as it is now. look after it pal and it will look after you. fords aint all that bad. my capri was 28 years old but everything was still in perfect working order
