Help with a good insurance quote.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am trying to insure my 1.3 Polo CL and all the quotes seem to be sooo high.

I live in a village with no GTA, I am 18 on the day I want it insured, no NCB, no convictions.

All the quotes are like 1.7k for TPF&T?!

Anyone manage to get cheaper quotes?

The only way I can think of getting it down to £700ish is by being a named driver on my dads policy and get him to move his NCB from his beemer to the polo and just protect his NCB.

Do what you've suggested.

I'm coming up to my 4th year of insurance in December and I've been a named driver from day one.

My dad pays for it though, but still I don't want him ripped off. Mine is 500 per annum, and I'm 20, been driving for 2 years 9 months.

its an offence to be a named driver on a policy and actually be the main driver! insurance companies have been cracking down on this trick, so be warned! Heres what i found after 30 secs of googling

'It may be tempting to put the policy in someone else's name - one of your parent's, for example - with you as the named driver. But if you're actually the main driver, this is known as ‘fronting’ and is illegal.

Insurers are increasingly tracing fronted policies. If you’re found out, the insurer may refuse to pay out in the case of an accident and may even pursue legal action for fraud.'

indy: if your the main driver of your car, then your insurance is about as much use as someone driving a modded car on a std policy

High insurance prices for young and new drivers is not a new thing. Over 10 years ago, I paid over £1300 to insure an MG metro worth £150 TPFT!

Good info posted above by g40jon, definitely worth noting.

As long as the car that your old man is insuring is put in his name and not listed as his only car there isnt much they can do, they going to have to prove your the main driver which is gonna be difficult seeing as he's listed as the legal owner short of stalking you daily they aint gonna come up which much proof

i know the feeling, my first car a 1 litre mk3 polo cost £1600 to insure and that was 9 years ago.

its ridic and the only people I've had nearly kill me on the roads since I've been driving is old people  they need to retesting some of them cant even see 2 feet infront of them or even have any sence of direction or where they are, yet they got more respect than "kiddies" who just passed

It's an offence but who gives a shit, you won't get anywhere in life following every rule in the book.

correct indy.

said this so many times,

I'm paying £2,400, when i paid i though this was a good deal, as most of the quotes i got where £3k+

when i got insured i was :

18

0 NCB

0 convictions

1 litre 6n2

i got bent over and arse raped the moment i drove of the drive :retard:

says the man whos always banging on at people that they should declare every little mod done to their car

This is a really big eye opener.

I'm really pessimistic atm. I'm 18 on Friday and was praying I could get insured by then.. Not happening though =[

fronting = fail.

If your dad has his own car and your polo in his name, and you are a named driver on the polo it's pretty clear to anyone whats going on. Wouldn't be hard to get a magistrate (who are born with a hatred for young people) to rule against you and in favour of the insurance company. Seriously, they don't need proof, just common sense, and these people aren't stupid, they know what goes on.

you tried naming your dad on YOUR policy? Brings it down a bit.

admiral mate put policy in your own name and add mother and father

i just got quote for 1300 at 18 1 claim 1 sp50 fully comp on 1.0 6n2 so reckon yours wouldnt be much more

to be fair, think about how much of the law is based on being able to prove something.. even if it is almost common knowledge.

and how often are insurance companies actually going to try and take you to court over something like that? more likely that they will just take your money when you buy the policy and try it on if you ever claim. all you need to say is that you were just using the car as a one-off or whatever, and there is nothing they can do to PROVE otherwise.

about three of my mates have had crashes in the last year and have all claimed on 'fronted' policies. they didn't ahve a problem at all, and so i question whether insurance companies are actually cutting down on the fronting at all?

X2 for Admiral, i was getting quotes of like £2000+ on my 1.4 Mk4 at 18..

got one for like £1600 from Admiral on my own..

added both the rents on and it came down to £1000! Mint!

I'm 17 and my insurance is £1800 for my 1.4 polo 9n S, putting your parents on your policy brings it down loads. Obviously I have no no claims bonus. A good idea is to go onto something like comparethemarket, get a quote and which ever is the cheapest, go to their site and get a quote through there site and use the compare website as a guide for the cheapest one. Don't go through the compare website as insurance companies pay commission so it will be more expensive.

I did the above and the cheapest quote I got was £1800 on churchill fully comp.

Hope this all makes sense and helps haha.

EDIT: I also did the same above and it turns out when I am 18 my insurance is going to be £760 pukka!

The situation itself proves beyond reasonable doubt remember, theres no jury, they just have to convince a grumpy old man.

Actually, fuck it, yeah you're right, do it the illegal way, I mean three of my mates sell copious amounts of drugs and they've never been caught. And so I question whether the police are actually against crime.

What situation, being in the driving seat at the time of crash/incident? That doesn't prove that you are the main driver of the car at all. You could have genuinely been driving the car for any reason as just a one-off, and if that is what you tell them then there's no way they can prove otherwise.

Unless of course they properly investigate your whole life and as has been said above.. 'stalk you'. But are they really going to bother going to those lengths? And how many cases have you honestly heard of where someone has been taken to court for fronting? They are probably just going to pay up as it is less hastle.

I'm not saying it's right and I'm not even going to touch on the morals of it and whether it's legal or not. I'm just telling it how it is and what the consequences of doing it that way are realistically going to be.

And comparing your drug dealing mates to this situation is hardly the same. The police were at all three scenes of the crashes and didn't question the validity of the insurance at all. My mates were all insured to drive the cars, and that is all they cared about. I'm sure if the police were at the scene when your mates were dealing drugs they would be alot more concerned.

^^^^ True stuff

I've actually had a car crash into me a while ago with my old man main driver and had some of my friends in the car too and at no point were the insurance interrogating me as to why i was driving with my friends or anything of a sort they just ripped the other drivers insurance a new one and sorted it out no problems, this also involved the police as the dude done it deliberately and they didnt have anything to question me about either

I just had a quote from Quinn for £1,400..

Then I added it was lowered and had alloys and it shot up to £1,977. WTF

Shall I just not declare it?

NO!!! declare!!! =] I'm with quinn and I'm driving with alloys and they said its fine and wont increase at all unless i do performance enhancing mods such as lowering etc... but even lowered they said it would increase about £10 a month

Tbf, you say 1700 is too much, i'd be dead happy with that, i've had quotes of 2800 fully comp, from quinn on a 1.3cl, before i've even thought about mods :|

Hence me probably having a tracker based insurance company

  • 2 weeks later...

Endsleigh Car Insurance do a great deal if your a student. They will give you 6 months worth of insurance but you get a years no claims from it. I'm insuring my 1.3 mk3 for less than £900. The catch is you have to renew your policy for 12 months after it. But you'll have 2 years NCB from only 1 and a half years, which is pretty good it think.
