Hi all,

Over the past few month's I have gathered a few pictures etc etc on my MK4's Progress and thought I would start a thread.

First a small background, she's a bog standard 1ltr who has had 2 owners from new, the first owner was a lady owner, all the documentation supplied with it from sevices etc etc all the way up to the point where the bloke who sold it to me brought it, he supplied all of this and then at the same date that he brought it the documents stopped, and it has been a very miss treated car since about that time to, I managed to wrangle it from him at 600 mainly because I needed a car fast and I was set on a polo I could afford to insure, considering he wanted 900 for it I think I did well. It also turns out he had been driving it round for 6 months with no tax! Even though I had my doubts mechanically it seemed fine and when I put it though them MOT all I got was "You had a bulb out in your number plate lights and your tread is getting a bit low but still fine, could do with a new exhaust by the next MOT."

Got it home and started the clean up, as it was in Brighton and both owners lived seafront the rust was abundant but only surface, nothing a good grind down couldn't solve, went over all the patches and at this point I decided right I have no money so I think until the full car respray lets go slightly rat, went into the local Halfords and brought a tin of "rust red" undercoat. treated all the bits and sprayed it on, although a few have come back the guy who is spraying has taken a look and said he will get rid of it completely and if it doesn't go he will respray it again at no cost. All good

Now onto some pictures (Click for better picture)

First off some MK5 lights were picked up and fitted:

I then replace the back bumper with a 1 piece, removed the badges and handle and smoothed them and de-wipered the back window:

Then followed the new front bumper, grill (due to hitting oil on the road causing me to hit a tree which I had posted up about sometime ago which was suspected to be a steak and kidney lock opener steal the car trick) and the indicators:

Then I decided while I waited for my Alloys and Coilovers to come that I would pick up a nice sub and make a boot build:

I decided at the time against spending tonnes and went for the cheap looks nice and will do for now until I have the time to put the proper effort in.

Today was the day of the Alloys and Coilovers session however before we fitted the Alloys we had to get the wheels weights done as they had dropped off in transit! So off we go down to the local garage and while waiting for them to finish you'd never believe it, SIR JIMMY SAVILLE turns up:

He needed a new backbox for his Volvo, the temptation to turn to him and ask "But Jim, surely you can fix it?"

Got home and the clouds had gathered so we decided to fit the Alloys first and see about coilovers after:

We managed to get the Alloys on but the clouds grew darker so we decided we would just skip the coilovers until tomorrow and rightly so, soon after putting the last centre cap back on the heavens opened!

So for now they are off the car :(

When they get fitted in tomorrow I will be back on most likely thursday evening to post up as I now have very little time, have to get them on tomorrow then straight off to record a band till god know what time at night!

Plan ahead of this goes something like:

Car goes into garage before the end of November to sort out tracking plus a full service,

January 2nd car goes in for complete respray and is finished by the 14th,

The search for interior ideas begins to go from ideas to reality,

Replace the boot build with a volcano of some kind still hiding the amp and trimmed in the same material as the rest of the car.

I thought while I was out there I might as well get the boot open quick to find out why my popper had stopped, here's why:

The fuse was also blown, it had worked but not in time! I sent an email off to the company and they were adamant that all the stuff they had told me to do was exactly right so I sent them those pictures and they quickly changed their minds

Midnight purple is the colour its going, plus the guy at the paint shop said nothing against my work, even though I have fillered everything I have done really well he wants to take it down and smooth it to make sure it is to his standards and because it's already done he's gonna throw it in for nothing!

Nice progress and like the sound of the plansa aswell, keep up the good work

Long first posts are awesome, reminds me of my first post in my build up, went from bog standard to coilys, grill, 2 different sets of wheels then finally settling for the standard steeilies again, and a valver rear bumper

Sorry we couldnt get the coilovers on today but tommorow is the day of judgement! This project should be epic once finished. However did look a bit sorry for itself sat on my drive on 3 wheels lol

Cant understand why the boot popper went like that though as mine has been fine (well its still working) maybe we should try a smaller amp fuse in it?

Btw people I'm a mate and helping in the progress of the build, use of tools also :-D . However no mention of me throughout the post makes me angry lol, also i think you missed a bit of progress about the wheel of steering that i helped fit. *cough cough*

Indeed buddy I did forget this, suddenly remembered that I also have a 280mm Team Momo wheel sat in there as well!

Yes I forgot to mention you but then again I did have a lot to write about and being in the same room with Jimmy Saville, well need I say more! :p

Update!

A couple of days ago I left you with this picture:

Yes thats right the coilovers are on and she's almost ready on the outside

A couple more developments to my plan as well, as you can see for a start I have taken the bump strips off the sides but to keep it looking beat up I'm leaving the gluey residue on there until the spray.

Things to come now along with the previous are:

Making a bracket to fit in the front of the bumper for the number plate so I can smooth out the recess and then take it off at shows.

Getting a seconds rear 16v bumper to make a cut out in to mount the rear plate as well as moving the lights for the plate

Providing I can get the rear bumper done without royally bodging it, smooth the number plate recess in the boot door

So now we play the waiting game, less then 2 months till the spray date and just little changes to make now before this!

and still no shout out for the lifts yesterday or for the person who suggested the bumper recess lol

saville is my shop loads when he is up here, hes a dirty perve with all the girls

Not much to update on, put my 15mm spacers on the back and now considering 10mm for the front, drive shaft needs a bit of looking it (if you call that progress)

Yeah I was at no rice parked up next to the red Seat Cupra

Car goes into the shop in less then 2 weeks So by about the 15th of Jan I will have a definite update

Is that for the respray or more body work?

Full Respray and bodywork, I have decided against the 35mm spacers, 1: It would cost me extra to have my arches widened and 2: I am selling them on as I need the cash however, the bodywork side is going to be Neil at (shameless plug) Blitz Bodyshop (Clicky Clicky) going over all my stuff that I have smoothed out already, he said I have done a great job but he wants to make sure its done to his standards so he can spray it and not have to then sand it down to do it again (basically I have done the main filling but it needs a skim over)

Once that is done I will have a few months of saving and then leather interior in about April time, giving me the next 4 months to plan what I want, something along the lines of cream interior and matching carpet and door cards then have mad door pillars and roof but I won't go too much into detail, there may also be some special little (very euro) mods done but I'm gonna keep a lot of this under wraps until its done and ready to be revealed, all I'm gonna say is it may take a few trips to the bodyshop in the next 4-6 months for different adjustments and added features to the paint

Plans sound shit, Would of been better to keep it on standard suspension and wheels and paint it pink.

I cannot remember the place I got it from, MR_N told me about them, this it was in car direct or someone like that but either way it broke :p

New plan for it all is to get the central locking, alarm and popper all done at the same time now anyway, I don't mind climbing in the backseat to open the boot until then, but this snow is slowing everything down, it went into the shop for spray on saturday, should have been stripped down and starting the primer easy by tuesday but because the guy couldn't get in, it has been knocked right back!

A half way marker on the spray job where it's almost good for primer!

And both arches, this is what's happening to it all!

Now I wait on the call to say come choose the final shade so I know he's got it right!

Awesome progress!!!! I have a funny feeling thats my old bumper :) Loving the plans and is finally coming along, gonna look sweet, how much is the whole respray costing you?? Mega bucks no doubt. Anywho hit me up some time, i changed to a valver now :p
