This is a bit vague but from the current description I would say it could either be low on oil or have a seagull stuck somewhere in the manifold!

unless seagull has another meaning pretty sure its non of them hahahaha! not sure what else to say tbh, what else can i add? x

Does it smell while running? Check the temperature when it comes up to heat? Is there smoke?

On a serious note if there is anything you can check then you should definitely check it, not saying I can give you a solution but if you give as much information as possible then you are more likely to get a good reply rather then some prat talking about seagulls

More than likely your hydraulic tappets.

They cause a slight tapping sound which can cause it to sound like a diesel slightly.

mine sounds like a jet taking off most of the time

tbh mate it could be a list of things but most of them ain't good,

as mentioned it could be your tappets,

or maybe you big end starting to give up the ghost, the bloke next doors bora sounded like a diesel just before his bottom end went bang,

could even be a weak oil pump or blockage causing low oil pressure and not getting oil to your top end,

there loads of things it could be but without more details all we can do is guess.

mine have gone on my polo, it was diagnosed by Volkswagen main dealer i believe.

not sure how they did it tho (was diagnosed before i bought the car), think it just makes a specific sound which someone can identify. usually happens when the engine is starved of oil for a while, they start to degrade then. a brand new genuine set from VW is £25 per tappet (so for 8v thats £200!) but i got a decent set from ebay for £50.

fitting them involves taking off rocker cover, and taking cam out although i'm not sure on this yet i'm yet to change them lol

Umm tbh there's no point getting brand new genuine VW ones, you could probs get a set off ebay for under £100 like i said. best to check that it is you are tappets first, haynes manual shows a way of doing it by checking clearance between cam and tappet with a feeler blade or something, or just have a specialist check it over..

Or you could just temporarily make it more bearable by chucking in some new oil.. maybe some slightly thicker stuff than would usually be used?

i topped the oil up a little bit the other day, didnt make a difference. i think the cambelts going as well, its making a whistley noise when cold, is that what it sounds like when its going? am i right in saying these things go at about the same time? and no a 16v 6n2. x

could be missfiring in 1 cylinder

i had this the other week mate, it turned out there was near unuff no oil in there, so got myslef down to halford and got a 5L bottle of engine oil and put just over half of it in and its okay now:)

What grade and make of oil did you use? I put some cheap shit in mine and it sounded terrible. Flushed it all out and put some quality stuff in and it was fine.

it says castrol, magnatec 10w-40 A3/B3 i think it was like £10 for 1L not to sure if thats cheap? does it sound like i need a different type of oil? x
