Basically a bit of a rant, been working on the car today sorting the little bits.

The drivers side window never worked so got set on that, basically long story short traced the wire from the plug trial and error plugs swore a fair bit, tried new regulator swore some more then found this:

Not impressed. I can only assume it did the usual goes down but don't go up so they cut it to stop people using it. However all working now so pretty happy. The car was £350 lol so i'm not to upset, and again the stereo was all cut to shit and had to wire a new loom in.

Anyone else seen some shocking DIY?

Nothing thats how i found it, was like yes found the reason why it ain't working. Then i was like lucky this is encased in rubber seeing as they were live wires haha

don't know if it counts, but saw some nob in a mk4 driving round with red steelies the other day... with red paint on the bodywork and the tyres... how lazy?

also seen my fair share of bad loom-repairs.

found the exact same thing in my mates birds KA, the window didnt work, and the stereo only worked with the doors open

It makes me laugh, as they could of just unplugged the switch hahaha

i wish i had taken a picture of my looms behind the dashboard! Biggest bodge job ever! Everythin worked but they all draw power when the ignition is off. E.g. Heated windscreen was drawing power, In car lights, heating even worked without a key, window wipers... lol the list goes on.

Gotta love the ole, find the live and wire EVERYTHING from it lol.

When i got the loon, the previous owner had taken his cd player out, and all thats left is 4 wires on a choccie box

checking the radio in my GF's brothers old corsa because it kept playing up.

The previous owner had realised one of the cables was 2" too short so found a long screw and wrapped the wires round either end to bridge the gap! Dodgy as fuck!

I think I may have the best one.

My G40 came with mk3 Golf GTI clocks bodged into the dash.

Most of the electrics that had been played with had been the usual chav/unprofessional repair with just loads of tape.

But the best bit, the clocks themself, obviously Mk3 Golf clocks dont fit in a Mk3 Polo clock hole.

So its been cut out bigger and obviously cut off the brackets that hold the mk3 clocks in....so they replaced these with rolled up masking tape and...a sock. Yes the clocks in my G40 were held in place with the aid of someones old sock!!!

I did indeed, you know who I bought it from too...had a poke around your car while I was there.

Previous owner had bodged the radio wiring and speaker wires from the radio were just push fitted into the original plug. Also the crappy alarm the car came with was wired so badly it would switch on the radiator fan sometimes when unlocking it and the hazards wouldn't stop.

Mk 2 Saloon. It had been convertted from double headlights to singles (scene thing), the spotlights were still dangling behind the grill (with bulbs), no sidelights (cut off), only lighting was when you put dip beam on, you got main beam (according to the bloke that did it, main beam is on the spotlights alone on mk2's).

About a year ago, I found enough of the loom in unbutchered state to run dip when the switch is on sidelights and beam when the switch is on dips as a temp measure..... AFAIK it's still like that.

The wiring in my mates Golf is truely shocking. Same as that, loads of wires that haven't been taped up or anything. Just left dangling.

My kit car had two engine bay looms when I get it.

I was tracing a wire and found it lead to the ignition coil - not bad for a diesel!

I'm forever fixing bodged wiring on peoples cars for them for free as I find it too dangerous to have them driving around with bodged wiring. Most of the wiring faults I find are behind stereos but my car had bodged immobiliser wiring. I've seen several cars with power cables run through holes in the bulkhead with no grommets in them, battery wires barely attached to the terminals and several bad earths including my mates old nova which had a piece of houshold plug wire for an earth from the battery to the bodywork (must have been less than 2.5mm diameter) and the car started with it! Major fire hazard there!

My view is that if you don't know what you are doing then get the fuck away from it, electricity (even 12-14v in cars) is very dangerous, only takes a stray live or insufficient wire guage for you to set fire to your car and it won't be fun watching your pride and joy go up in flames.

off on a little tangent, not really to do with wiring.. but i hate it when people leave bolts and stuff stripped and don't try to sort it out.

like they will try and start a job, fuck it up by mashing a bolt, and then just leave the mashed bolt on the car.

discovered this with both my calipers, subframe mounting bolts and the crankshaft pulley to name but a few. pisses me off as it just like triples the amount of time it takes to do anything. and it wasn't even my fault!
