I'm looking to buy a decent socket set for doing work to my cars. Obviously want it to be good quality and long lasting. Was thinking of going to Halfords to have a look. Can anyone recommend any decent manufacturers or had experience with Halfords tools? Some of the old Halfords tools at home seem pretty good.

I got the halfords tool box with the metal case a few years ago, i've built and destroyed a lot of cars with it. Other than having to add some specialist tools myself it's really not a bad box to start off with.

I've had my Halfords Pro 150 piece set for about 2/3 years now and everythings still there and still works. Cost me £100 so good value for money to!!

At work, on aircraft i tend to use more snap on and facom stuff, But there are a couple of halfords pro bits floating around in my box.

The price is a big factor, I dont use my garage tools everyday so i cant justify spending 100 quid on a rail of sockets. But at work, i use them everyday i want them to last and cope with the high torques stresses and strains they get subjected too!

Yep, Halfords tools seem to be the only thing halfords is good for

They have a grantee on them too, so even if they do break you should still be ok.

If you use a halfords trade card u get it for like half the price as well

Yeah snapon are supposedly the best, Although I have only heard bad things about the guarantee they 'offer' and them not replacing tools that have broken.

ye i have had snapon tools brake befor cheap ones and like you say thay do there best not to give you your cash back or replacing them

Another vote here for Halfords.

Just keep your receipt somewhere safe. A friend had problems getting bits replaced without one.

All the stuff at the Garage is Snap On / Mac stuff and I've no issues with it.

i've got an halfords tool set and as long as its used properly they are fine but trying to undo a wheel bolt with the middle size ratchet will brake it

do you need a receipt to get broken halfords tools replaced? lost mine ages ago but life without a middle sized ratchet is difficult as that's the one that most of the attachments fit :(

no shouldn't need a reciept!

halfords is a good place to start. the peices are good for most tasks, but i've had experience with some snapping here and there.

makes i'd recommend are

bluepoint

mac tools

snap on

they're all goood and have guarantees.

get toold with lifetime guarantee's its a good thing to have.

aslong as its a halfords professional/advanced piece then just take it bck to em and they should replace it there and then for you ... aslong as they have it in stock :)

Halfords tend to be quiet good at replacing broken stuff, although they did start asking questions when i took back 5 broken breaker bars in 4 days

If its got halfords professional/advanced writen on it they can't realy refuse to take it back as its obviously not come from anwhere else

Get your self a trade card, knocks money off anything there class as trade items :-D stupidly easy to get one aswell

If you can afford it go for MAC or simular

Halfords have always asked me for a reciept. Hence if I ever break anything I buy a new one, then use the reciept to take back my broken one a week or two later.

Just dont buy the breaker bars cos they are wank. First the spring bit falls out so the ends all floppy and then the forks shear off. Utter crap. And it says summot like 400nm on the packet. Total bull.

yeah i popped one of those breaker bars at 250ftlb

about 340nm

Most of mine haven't even lasted to anywhere near that.

if you dont like rounding off rusty nuts id reccomend a sykes pickavant set

you can gethem trade from buck and hickman, they are the doge bollocks
