So I'm just about to renew insurance and a few days later I plan to add a learner

named driver who turns 17 very soon after the insurance starts with the plan of

some learn to drive with dad sessions until we've saved up for a proper driving school

or fall out doing three point turns in ice and snow.

Can't add them any earlier as they are not yet 17.

Mistyping the date of birth to be a couple of days earlier I reckon the named provisional license driver will cost £250 (or so) more

which is way better than if it was their own car - except for the "no no-claims-bonus swindle" and the "they've passed the test they are dangerous" unknown loading factor.

I check out the specimen policy and there's an admin fee of £25 to change the cover which I assume will kick in when I add them when they are really 17.

Does this mean I'm paying the insurance company to pay them more?

Anyone got any better ideas?

It might be worth discussing it with the insurance company. I've been insured with elephant and admiral in recent years and a few times they've waived their £25 admin fee when I've been waiting for a number transfer to go through.

Probably best to make sure that they have the correct information in case of a claim.

yeah i would just have a chat with them. i've been with admiral and they've always been helpful. they do wave about their £15 admin fee a bit aswell, but thats always been when I've changed my policy back to its original car.

i bought insurance for my polo with them. then, i went and bought another polo for parts and so changed the cover onto polo 2 from polo 1 just to drive the new polo home. this incurred no charges or admin fees.

a day later when i wanted to use polo 1 again, and polo 2 the scrap car was parked off the road i asked to switch back to my original car. this incurred no extra cost to the premium, but it did incur the £15 admin fee.

both times when i changed the registered car they sent me documents, but only charged me an admin fee when i returned to my original car. even though the 'admin' fee is to cover the printing and sending of documents.

did the same again with a volvo, and only got charged £15 when i returned to my original car.

for you, i would just ask them if they can postpone sending you documents for a few days after the policy renewal until you alter the policy. they might not be able to do it for legal reasons, but its worth a try - you will have a cover note anyway for when they are in the post. then they wont be sending you an extra set of documents so cant really charge you an admin fee.

the renewal documents will probably still be in the post when you go to alter the policy to put the kid on if royal fail have anything to do with it.

hi, i always add my gf onto my insurance as she is a learner driver and with elephant,admiral and adrian flux they reduce the cost, last year by adding her i got £186 off my total.
