Insurance + Being 17 = FAIL :(

Featured Replies

I'd never pay over a grand for insurance! When I was 18 with 0 years no claims I paid £650

Now I'm 19 with a years no claims I pay just over 500. Been getting quotes for Corrados/Mk3 GTI's for just under 800 quid.

Same here.

Dont seem worth it if the cars worth less than what you pay in insurance!

First car back in '98 was £860 iirc TPFT with me as a newly passed driver. Never got any closer to £1k.

How exactly did you manage £650 at 18 with 0 no claims?

insurance top tip, say the car is on the driveway and NOT in the garage.

Knocked my G40 down from 3300 to 3000

they say its because they get a load of claims because people knocking things off their shelves onto their cars.

also add parents and other experienced drivers onto the policy as named drivers to bring it down.

edit: have you tried using a high voluntary excess as well brings it down a fair wack

The garage thing wouldn't make a difference on TPFT.. as you cant claim on your own car.

Adding people as named drivers wont help, if you are still the main driver. Well, it was exactly the same for me when i added my mom to mine.

And the high excess thing. Yes it brings it down loads. But you are well and truly fucked if something does happen. Its all good if it doesn't. but it makes having insurance useless if it does.

I like to think ill hopefully never need it. but if I crashed into sum1 and they claimed. I wouldn't wanna be the 1 paying out the 1st £1000 and then my insurance still ass raping me the year after due to the claim. No matter how much of the claim u pay urself. the insurance will still go up by the same amount the next year because of the claim.

on a provisional, try getting a quote with a full license and see what it goes up by ;)

Ummm I'm with bell. Added my rents as named drivers. That brought it down a lot.. thats pretty much it.

not another young driver insurance thread!

try flux direct mate i got a good price with them they are specified for young drivers

The best price for young drivers is DEFINATELY I-kube, and its by a country mile. I-Kube It is insurance for 17 to 25 year olds. I am 18 and have recently jsut been insured with them. I think they are fantastic. I was getting quotes of about £2300 etc for a 1.4 polo 75 Bhp. But with this company I am paying £1300! A WHOLE £1000 CHEAPER!

Chuffed to bits tbh. I highly recommend it. However, this scheme was put in place just to get young drivers off the road in the night. This means that you cannot drive the car between the hours of 11pm and 5am. They fit a GPS tracker on it and if its senses movement you instantly get charged £45 and recieve a text from the insurance company letting you know.

I don't really need to use it in the night. So it suits me down to the bone.

Can they move the hours, like 1am to7am?? haha, I would but 11ams well too early, 12am would be alright, Suppose the odd £45 charge i could live with.....

Ill see what i get :D

That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. I'd rather pay the extra.

And I have no idea how you got £2,300 at 18 on a 6n. I got £1,100 on a Mk2 when I first passed my test, at 18, with breakdown cover, third party any other car, with only me on the policy, and parked on the road. You're getting ripped off mate.

I'm with admiral and I'm now paying £460

I'm 20 with 3 fault claims 3 points and one years no claims

Get a diesel people

oyea and all mods declaired!!!!

I find this a little hard to believe tbh but thats IMO.

My first insurance quote on a 1.4 axgt when i was 17 was £1500 but i got it for £980 because i added my mum as an aditional driver. I'm now 23 and i pay £600 fully comp on a JDM civic type-R. That's with everything included i.e protected no claim's, windscreen cover etc etc. It's all down to your age I'm affraid, you'll just have to skint yourself.

My gf is learning to drive and she's just bought a clio 182 cup. her insurance is £890 atm but will go up to £1750 when she passes.

As for search engine's, I found gocompare expensive and moneysupermarket the cheapest.

good luck!

i've always wondered why insurance gets more expensive after you pass?! No wonder so many people buy a car thinking they can insure it and then the minute they pass, they discover the truth.

I would think it's due to the fact you don't drive like a dick with your mam or dad in with you.

But yes, I got caught out with insurance, i got quoted £2000 with Quinn Direct for my car, saying i had passed my test. A month later i passed my tests and my quote had gone on £600.

Mate 1300 quid ain't really cheap for an 18 year old. An having a box GPS box fitted so you can't drive between 11pm and 5am must fucking suck. When I first got a car half of the enjoyment was being able to have freedom, going where I want and whatever time I wanted.

But fair play, If you don't drive at night then alls gravy :-)

On a provisional you must have someone with you.

it's not a 6N it's on a 6N2.. it was the 75bhp 1.4, 6N has a 59bhp 1.4 - just to be a KNOB!

this policy would suck if it was for your daily, i'm actually going to consider it though for my beetle as it's only really driven on weekends etc and in the day for shows and stuff. i can't get classic car insurance so this is the best option after a limited mileage one.

might try and get a quote now actually..

(and NO i don't work for that ikube company as the first guy clearly did lol)

Yep, but whatthe hell they gonna do apart from rip the handbrake up or rip the steeringwheel out your hand? if you're doingsomething drastically wrong, its not gonna be a happy ending!

to be fair it is mostly psychological. i wouldn't dare drive like a idiot if my rents took me out, even if they couldn't physically stop me.

i would have got soooo grounded!

that's probably the case with most peeps and insurance realise this i think.
