I'm looking to get a basic air filter around £25-£35 just to give the sound a bit of a kick on my 1.0 L 6N and to look nice in the engine bay. Theres a few I've found so far, a Max Power cheapo one from argos which I'm not too keen on getting, and then three other Ripspeed ones from Halfords. I was thinking about a K&N 57i induction kit, but realised its not worth the money to what it would probably do to my car.

The thing is, I need some help about the airbox and how it all works...

I have looked at the air box and filter with my Uncle just to get an idea of how it's all put together. We ended up removing the air filter, then putting it back in and putting the box cover back. Before that though, my Uncle started up the car without the air filter for as couple of seconds to see how much difference it made to the sound etc. Later that day...I was driving up a hill and the car got stuck on full revs...I had to brake, pull the handbrake and turn the engine off. When I started the car after, it just went straight to full revs. Again, later that day...I called someone out to have a look at it, but by that time the car was ok and normal again. He said it could have been something to do with a sensor and how it can be affected by changes in how the car normally runs or is built to run.

I wanted to try and find out more about this sensor and how it works...and then whether I could cause damage by fitting a cone air filter.

that sounds like your throttle was stuck open, try lubing up your throttle cable where it attaches to the throttle body,and the throttle mechanism,

an induction kit will not affect the engine like this, it will give you a tiny bit more torque and just sound ten times better!

Ok, thats cool...thanks for your advice. It's good to have the reassurance it shouldn't affect it.

Whats the difference between an air filter and an induction kit? The ripspeed "air filter" from halfords looks the same as the k&n "induction kit" from what I remember.

Well an air filter is what it is... a filter whereas an induction kit contains piping to induct the air, which means you can reroute the position of air source.

I think your best bet would be to take the entire air filter housing (the entire black box) off and fit a faster flowing filter to the throttle body. Also bear in mind that filter musn't be to tall or it won't fit under the bonnet.

I have one of these waiting to fit to my Mk3 Fox (1l) so if someone could tell me what parts I need that would also help, although I think stresshead told me I need a mk3 golf elbow..?

I wouldn't bother mate. "Induction kits" are a load of bollocks. If anything it'll lower the performance if not installed properly in the correct place due to heat soak. Fair enough if you want one, then make sure you propely route it and set up a heat shield. Also may be worth routing the crank case breather to an oil catch tank if you don't want the cabin to reek of oil haha.
