Well i thought i would get a progress thread going on here, not had one since, well cant remember if i ever have...

Picked this caddy up with no engine, looked solid enough, was cheap, so home it came with me...

the work starts, the shell wasnt bad at all on first looks, but it had a few gremlins in the closet that i found later...

the usual rott places it was pritty clean, bed fine, rear arch bits fine, it has had replacement sills, and this was where alot of the problems came from, they had not removed all the rott from the old sill and just trapped it in! i pulled out so much rott, which had caused this...

cut it out and plated it, so that wasnt as much of a ball ache as planned

then the dreaded rott, i found out that the car has had a really weak respray and fix up, not treated any rust, just fibreglassed it painted over

the windscreen surround was shot, beyond repair

so after a bit of sweating and alot of MSN conversation to my mate who is great with a welder, we had a plan...

(at a few points i was ****ting myself)

a bit of hammering and moving was needed, but it was pritty much lined up well

So that was the lower section done, we decided to do it in 2 parts, just to keep the shape, and ease of getting it on right

and after taking that front splitter off it revealed 2 heavily rotten pattern wings

so i sorted 2 vag ones

another bummer was whoever tried to fit the G60 engine in it had to bend the front panel, so it its getting the top section cut out and replaced

the green cover on back is only there to keep things dry in the back, will be just getting the rott treated, engine in and running, and mot, then start modifying a few bits, going to ride stock ride height for a bit too!

todays work

well slow progress due to crap weather, but finally got the screen surround filla'd and primed and painted, finish is not brilliant, but to be quite honest I'm not bothered, i just want the thing driveable

so once this is done i can get the loom back in, and the dash, seats, carpets, free up some damn space

opted for a toad alarm to be fitted too, just so insurance dont spit their dummy

hoping for some good progress at the weekend

and a few recent ones

found a hole in the passenger footwell, so got weld happy and plated a section in

coming on well, i did a g40 caddy a year or so, got it all up and running but my mate never put it on the road and ended up breaking it which was a shame.

look forward to seeing the progress.

yeah i remember you posting on caddy forum, i did wonder how you got on with it, shame, i think a g40 caddy will be rapid, well I'm hoping!

You should well get van rear end on ot or get that truckman thing fixed onto it :-) sleeeeeper!!!

now this is what i call a build thread, lucky you know a good welder, as I'm sure that would have set you back a lot of money to get all those bits sorted! quality of the work looks superb

i may have a couple of sought after bits laying around, not sure if i lobbed them or not.....

had the rod shift from a 1.3 golf mk1 needed for the g40 box and the front gearbox mount off a 1.3 golf too also needed to fit the g lump.

always wanted to do this but could never come across cheap enough donor cars, always thought the same as you Dan that it would be pretty quick .. have to wait and see now :)

well the rear engine mount, needed just a bit of a trim to fix the box, the drivers side, unlike how i have seen other do it, they modify the actual mount, we decided to weld in a mk3 polo mount base, and use the original g40 mount.

The gearbox one, we used half and half and welded them together.

Shifter I'm pritty sure i can get the standard one to work, i love my G40's and i love my caddys, so i just thought, might aswell put the 2 together

this will be fat when your done mate, good work!!!

i meant the front gearbox mount, specific to the 1.1 + 1.3 mk1 golf and you do need the small block linkage / rod shift.

i'm not looking for cash just postage if you wanted them (and i can find them)

yeah hats off to fred, the room for error was not much, but we made it, didnt really want to be doing such a big job, but i could have hidden it but i knew it would only come back to haunt me at a later date

no real exciting progress this weekend, rained too much, got a few more rust holes in the cab welded up, so now finally i can start putting the interior back in, desperately need some shelter to finish bits off

but hey, I'm in no rush lol
