There seems to be different thoughts of the meaning behind this...

Some think its if you have done all the work yourself

Other think its if its not how you bought it.

In my opinion its more so if you have done all the hard graft yourself and made it truly your own car. And not if you have just given it to the pros to do, even if you are the man behind the ideas and mods.

Way I see it,

Bought: Paying a third party i.e. professionals to do the work for you

Built: doing the above said work yourself.

I was reading an old PVW, I think it was 9OLO's car, showcar in every sense... From what I read he achieved that by doing as much work as he could, minus the paint... Think the engine was tinkered with at Jabba but apart from that it was all his own doing. I'd say it was built from what I read.

i'd consider my car as built not bought, converted the engine, fitted seats, bumpers, brakes etc etc, welded my bonnet notch out and welded my custom skirts on, i painted my bonnet and smoothed and painted my skirts myself. however to acheive the finish of paint i desire it will go to a bodyshop for paint only. even after this i consider my car built not bought.

yeah, when the work is done yourself, paying someone to refurb wheels, paint parts, your mearly instructing someone to do it

but views do differ evidently, there is another thread with someone who says built not bought, but in my eyes it is very much bought not built! no work done themselves

bolting some wheels on does not really count?

but to what extent does it go that is the question? i had a friend do some welding on my windscreen, as i was not capable to do it correctly, where does that come into it?

If you go out and earn the money your self and pay someone to paint you car, polish your wheels etc.. Then you deserve that car you have, it doesn't matter if you did the work you self or not, end of the day it's your car, your own money has gone into it. Nobody elses.

I think most sceneiuns see it as they have payed for the work to be done therefore its there taste and they have done it and they didnt buy it that way.

I would see it as i built it, ok it might not be show std but atleast i can say its all my own work and i dont just throw a scene name at it when i feel the urge.

my mk1 scirocco is bought not built. i am doing every thing to it (every thing from paint/body work to engine conversion work). the way i see it how can you say its bought not built when your getting some one else to do some thing with it?

if its not 100% your work then how can you claim its bought not built? any thing but then your just a fagot tbh.

al admit i paid for everything to be done to mine...ad rather spend money for someone else to do sumat than do it in this cold weather lol....

You haven't bought the car already modified from the previous owner.

I don't see the shame in it though. As long as you've got an eye for detail and steer the project creatively, and get it how you want, why shouldn't you be proud of a 'bought' car?

Sometimes I see cars with this sticker in the back, and they've been put together by a mechanic/painter/ICE installer. Of course you'll build it yourself if you can. I would, if I had the time and the knowhow. But I don't, so I get other people to do a lot of it.

And that doesn't bother me, my car is still very much my car. I've worked damned hard to get it how it is and I've done a fair amount myself, but a lot of it is through spending my hard-earned cash not my spare time. It's not a chequebook car by any means, but if I can't do the work I let someone else take care of it. If I didn't, it'd wait for months before I had the time and energy to sort things out. I'm so exhausted after work I don't have the energy or motivation.

I'm not disrespecting anyone who can build their own car, if anything I'm envious of your technical ability, but my strengths are elsewhere. I just get a bit pissed off when people get all self-righteous about building their own cars and put me down for only getting my hands dirty once in a while.

if i can't do some thing i teach myself how to do it, surely that's the how ethos behind built not bought? if you can't do it you pay some one else o do it, there's no shame in that, its just not built not bought that's all.

I just wish I had the money to give it to someone else to do all the work tbh

If I did, I know I would. I'm not putting anyone down for not doing the work themselves though.

Doing it myself saves a shed load of cash, and the fact I enjoy working on my car helps shed loads. I enjoy working on it just as much as driving it.

And as big headed as this may sound, I love being able to say I've done it all myself

I dont possess some of the technical skills to do some of the work myself so its outsourced. I get home from work and sleep all afternoon as I'm so tired.

Some of it i am doing myself so its not 100% bought. I'm slowly gathering the knowledge to do alot more stuff so maybe one day......

but if you buy an already modified car, then re-modify it yourself and change it totally, with a little help from some friends... that would also be built not bought?

140 quid for refurbing and polishing is a steal, especially if you can't do it yourself

i suppose whichever way you look at it, there are many ways to define it.

My opinion on built not bought is Nearly the same as the majority see it it's if you the majorityog the work yourself or with friends/family, ie me and my dad did my cam belt yea he lined up the timing marks but I dropped the engine off the mount took the car apart removed old one, slackened the altenator and replace both belts then he just lined the timing marks up as I wasn't confident enough but next time I will be but I had a big hand in that, so that's built. I am getting some body work done and I am doing all the prep but paying for it spraying as I don't wanna make it look like stevie wonder did it lol the cr is still mainly built by me

bought for me is seeing a car that's already done and buying it and not putting your own personal stamp on it

what I see quite abit is people with brilliant ideas but other people doing it this is an example of a chequebook car which a fair few people are guilty of having!

Should you be proud to own either a "bought" or "cheque book" car of course you should but for me it's the satisfaction of standing back and thinking I created that with these two hands, maybe some friends and my imagination, that's y my car will neither be "bought" or "chequebook" but you may like to stand back and think oh my word I have put in X amount of overtime just so I could get this done to my car, the feeling should be the same non the less

Yep, and the wheels seemed damaged beyond repair. Sometimes things have to be left to the experts. Steel wheels though I would have no problems refurbing those.

depend what your after a showish type of car of just a car that makes you happy everyday driving....

i think i achieved both with mine, i drive it everyday with the height....park up at shows get the attention like other show cars...and the thing thats put the biggest smile on my face....is magazines calling you wanted to feature it...3 magazines to be exact!

and i did all of this before i turned 19!!!!

alhough i paid for everything expcept for the audio which i fitted!!!!!!! :)

p.s. i think that people need to stop hating on people that pay others to carry out work on thier cars and in fact have dope ones!!!
