I would do everyting myself if I had the resources.

The only thing I've paid to be done are my wheels and my bodywork, because I don't have any of the resources required to do either of those things.

140 quid for refurbing and polishing is a steal, especially if you can't do it yourself

I know fuck all mechanically, but I know stuff about modifying, like trimming, audio, spraying and prepping bits and bobs.

I think alot of it is down to lack of tools aswel.

halfords professional rachet set up to size 23 or so, some torx keys and a few multisplines is all you really need for tools...

other fairly easy things like polishing wheels (not targetting you here indy, i know you had to have dishes welded on and stuff). people send them away to companies to get done by "professionals" when its not that difficult to do yourself if you've got time and some patience.

Yep polishing wheels can't be too hard to do, but is the equipment expensive? Machine polishers etc?

depending on the condition of the wheels, its not that expensive.

if they're painted then you simply nitromors them to get all paint off and go through different grades of paper. if there's no pitting (or only small marks) then i start with 240 then 400, 800, 1500 then polish with either autosol or peek. the elbow grease is free :)

edit: if there is bad pitting marks then i hit with some 80 to get the majority of it out then go to 240, 400 etc...

Are there any sorts of special tools you can buy which can get into tight spaces? It's very difficult to sand with any real force when you've got the paper rolled up into a little stick shape? To get between the rivets etc.

Depends what equipment the company are using I guess, a lot seem to use (don't know the correct term for it), but a lathe type thing with a Jig for the wheel to sit on. Dunno how much they are but I bet it's thousands! However, you can do the same job with some wet an dry and some good ol elbow grease, will just take ages.

do you mean on your rsl's where the bolt head things go?

i usually fold the paper up a bit and get in with the corner of the fold and twist round :) usually leave this til last because it can rip the paper.

I don't think there's anything wrong with any of it, if you pay for a simple service and oil change it may or may not be the case that u don't know anything about cars but is that an offensive comment? I don't think so and I think people should stop using it in this way and also poeple should stop reacting in such defensive ways when it's said to them!

If someone came up to me and said haha u just got your oil changed by a trained pro u know fuck all about cars id turn around and reply actually I do know abit about cars but I dint have time to get the oil and filter from town, come home, get all my tools needed change out of my nice clothes to scruff and do it, It wouldn't bother me one iota it's my car!

Servicing a modern car though is impossible now. You need about 10 grands worth of computer

I was looking at Ferrari's yesterday, in particular the 348. Cambelt change every 2 thousand miles lol.

who actually cares...i did my car to not only make myself proud of it...but i think 'not blowing my own trumpet' that people took recognition of my Polo this season!!

i love my polo and I'm sure everyone on this site loves there polos and thats why there on this forum!!!!

I'm over the moon that i know people that think 'polos' are for small people etc....actually shut thier mouth when they saw my car this year and the fact nothing has been done in terms of ENGINE!!!!
