I buy PVW every month without fail, and depending on the cover car I'll buy Golf+/fastcar/max power

Bought = Got the cheque book out to join the ' I love paint brigade' or trailer queen society.

well i was pleasantly suprised with the copy of max power i got a few months back, not how it used to be one bit, i found it a better read that PVW, it has gone so same same with the contents, it is just boring now!

Yeah, not bought PVW for about 4 years now since its same ol same ol. Max Power has reinvented itself of late and a better read tbh.

Haven't read the rest of the thread, just agree with the first comment.

If you pay someone else to do it, you are essentially buying the service.

Hence buying the mods.

Hence buying the car in that state.

Hence 'Bought', NOT 'Built'.

Although I suppose you could argue that if you say.. fitted a non-standard bumper.. even if you fitted it yourself, you didn't actually build the bumper yourself, just put it on. You 'bought' the bumper to start with, you didn't 'build' it.

But then in a way, 'building' is just putting all the parts together - whether you made them or not.

But then.. 'technically', you bought the car and it was already built. All the parts like engine, chassis, body, wheels, electrics were all put together making a running car before you bought it. The factory did all the building. It's not like you bought a kit car and put it all together yourself from seperate parts, so in this respect.. every car is 'bought' really.

But I think that's just maybe taking it a bit far? I've actually just confused myself

If you got it in pieces and it was given to you (free) then that id 100% 'built not bought'

IMO built - is if you'v done the work on it yourself/paid for it to be done. Bought is if it came into your possesion already modded/in show condition and yuou have started to show the car :)

'Built not bought' is exactly what it says on the tin imo.

Put the wallet away,noone gets paid to work on your car,its built by you or bought by you. Whether you buy it in small chunks or in one piece is irrelevant as its all the same.

But yeah,you've got to draw the line somewhere. I built mine from a bare shell (re-shell with an '88) on an open driveway,built the engine the same,did everything.

So its built not bought.

Or is it? I bought the suspension kit,just fitted it. And though i stripped the shell and flatted it,someone else laid the paint. The entire interior is the '88 so i only fitted it,its not like i re-trimmed the seats or anything.

I tightened every single nut and bolt on this car,yet technically it doesn't entirely qualify as 'built not bought' so i dont think it can be so sternly categorized.

I say this but I then become a hypocrite: I don't see mine as bought but some would say otherwise as I pay for my engine mods and work to be done

But I'd call a lambo Mk4 for instant a cheque book car. But that's just my opinion.

But show cars is a totally different ball game imo, that's their goal whether they do it themselves or not nowadays isn't it?

To me, a real show car winner though should be those that were stuck in the cold in their garage doing stupid hours and giving full blown effort and grat for their passion to make their car perfect. Shame we don't see enough off these winners anymore

Tbh I think its the attitude you take on it. If your making up reasons why you can't do something then your already admitting defeat before you've even began. Andy hasn't even got a car or a license yet but he still comes down the garage and does some work. Set him about with a job and he'll have a fucking good go at it or he'll give you a hand with something if you needed it. Its the only way to learn really. As for not having the tools or resources again thats just down to yourself, I never used to have any tools. But I bought tools slowly, started of with shitty ones but have got a decent selection now. Same with a space to work, never used to have a unit but do now. Its all down to how much you want to do it. I really want to learn so even though I work 60 hours a week I still find time to go to the garage and do some work. I've never prepped or painted a car in my life but I'm doing it with my Lupo. It could go tits up, who knows. But I'm only going to learn by doing it.

For me building a car is the fun part. Going down the garage and having an idea, getting stuck, bouncing ideas of other people to try and find a solution. Fucking about, playing pranks on each other and eventually churning out some cars. I don't think I'd see my car in the same sort of light if I just dropped it off somewhere and asked them to ring me when its done. Half the fun would be lost for me but thats just my opinion.

For me theres a sense of pride/achievement which you get when you've done something yourself. I don't think I'd get the same feeling if I was going to pick my car up from somewhere else.

This is a good point well made. Keskins are the same, fakies but nobody seems to care. Personally, while I'd love a pair of actual split rims I'm quite happy to pay half the price for a set of fakes. Who cares? That said, sometimes I'd prefer it if they didn't even pretend. Nothing wrong with a one piece wheel which looks like a one piece wheel.

I don't get all this bought not built shit. If a car comes up for sale which I like which I can put my own mark on i'll buy it. Mods I'll pay to be done properly.

I can't see how you can build a car unless you are in the trade... to spray a car you must have the facilities / knowledge to do so to get a decent finish.

To tune an engine these days you need to be an expert computer programmer and really no what you're doing.

OK i'll fiddle about with bolt on bits n pieces but that's about it! And I'm proud of that too, if I can afford to pay someone to do something then I will. I paid someone to install my amp wiring kit in my old car even though i used to work in the ICE industry and could of done it with my eyes closed i just could be fucked. One day I'll pay someone to wash my boxxers... anyone got an issue with that or is that not "scene"?

I've got fake splits on my Passat - personally I'd prefer them if they didn't have the bolts around the edge. I even considered removing them and smoothing over the holes hahaha!

And I still don't get the hatred towards Lensos, everyone keeps saying they're gash but I reckon they look alright. Similar enough to the real thing for the cash-strapped modifier not to care. So what if up close they're not stunningly high quality, you get what you pay for. In this case, a wheel which looks a lot like a split rim BBS unless you're up close.

My wheels on the Passat aren't replicas of anything, tbh they don't even look like actual splits. I like the way the wheel looks enough to ignore the bolts.

Why was it out of order? its a genuine question, which is still yet to be answered, i just dont see where all the interest comes from, not a dig, nothing i really am asking a serious question, not wanting digs back at me, jelousy, jesus you could not be further from the truth
