Shame VW didnt bring the 6n GTI to england because it would have wooped all of them in my opinion!

"The 6n GTI, a 1.6 16V 120 bhp unit it was said that the

car would sprint to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds, whilst top speed was a claimed 120 mph"

The saxo 0-60 is 7.2 and top speed 127mph

not all about figures, and performance stats, polos way better made and in my opinion a lot better looking (I'm reffering to the 6n GTI.)

Plus I've driven both the saxo and the 106 GTI and as good as they might be on the road i found them both to feel really cheap, and personally i think its the whole driving experience, not just the outright thrash appeal, but like i said its just my thought :-)

how can you say the mk4 was well made! I've seen more mk4 polos down my local scrappy than i have saxos and 106s put together!

i do agree that they are better looking in std trim than a saxo though

thats not a very well founded argument tbh (referring to polos in scrappys)

its just from personal experience mate thats all, I'm not basing it on the thought that "its german therefore its better," like a lot of people tend to do, its just from what I've experienced, but your right polos arent the epitome of build quality

That statistic means sweet fuck all lol.

I'd have the 106 GTi out of the lot, I'm thinking of one as my next car. My friend has a 106GTi and the build quality isn't too bad, but the spec is miles above a 16v polo!

I think the review by Jezza was spot on.

The VTS and 106 GTI are cracking cars and are quick...like standard G40 quick.

The 16v Polo was never going to be close to that, being heavier than a Mk3 G40 and having 13bhp less than a G40.

And then you have the driving of the thing. The Saxo/106 is a little go-cart as standard, prone to picking a back wheel up in the bends but otherwise a good handling car.

The Polo is awful standard, lowered by just 10mil from VW but still having very soft suspension, it just rolls about and isn't exactly fun.

Given the choice of having to live with a standard version of any of the cars shown... the Saxo VTS would be my choice.

106 GTi will have been the most fun to drive and best to look at in standard form. But to live with day to day, it's got to be the Polo, especially 12 years on!

Those Puntos were fucking awful though.

that polo got slatted

there's no point referring to the 6n gti mate, we didn't get it and clarkson wasn't testing it :?

yea i know, i was just making a point to another guy who said that even the gti version of a 6n still wouldnt have beaten the vts n 106, and i disagreed claiming its not all about performance stats, n i knw we didint get it n i know tht clarkson didnt test it

tbh the 6n gti probably would get owned by the 106/saxo, giving the car more power will not change the fact that the polo isn't as good handling as the other 2. i'm not saying the polo handles badly, just that its being compared to some thing that handles really really well.

oh definetley, i think that from experience of driving both cars (106 & saxo) for a decent period of time, i found that they were an absolute riot on the road and for sheer driving pleasure and putting a massive grin on your face they would wipe the floor with the Polo, but they just felt really cheap and nasty, and for me its about the all round appeal and i think the polo would be better to live with everyday, but we all have different tastes

But even the 6n GTI in a straight line would have been whipped by the Saxo/106 as they still have more power. The 6n GTI had something like 118bhp whereas the saxo/106 have 125bhp and are lighter cars.

The only thing that makes the 6n 16v better than a Saxo VTS/106 GTI is the fact that when each hit 100,000 miles, the Polo will pound on still producing standard power. Whereas the Saxo/106 will more than likely break, You rarely see these going well after the 100k mark.

Wanted a 106 Rallye for years, so that gets my vote :).

if i was to buy one id have a vts as they are cheaper! and better handling then the polo and also quicker!

IMHO you would have to be a spoon to go for the polo.

Not only does it handle worse and is slower, but at least the others actually look like a 'hot hatch'. The polo 16v just looks like a car my mum would drive.

well if the saxo vts/106 gti are so good why do the people who bum them not own them?

I did have a 106 GTI and it was a fantastic car... OK mine was a pristine example with only 35k miles on the clock and it felt like it was new.

They are a fantastic car and if you can find a decent example i'd recommend one to anyone wanting a hot hatch for driving thrills.

I just wouldn't buy a cheap one.

Thats Top gear video was made 13 years ago.

All the VTS's now are thrashed old heaps that have fallen apart.

But the Polo has stood up well apart from the odd Rusted one.

Thats why I would rather have a Polo now.

But given the choice 13 years ago, Saxo VTS all day long for me.

i'm sure some people that own them do bum them

a lad who used to live 2 doors down from my old house had a mint pug GTI

me and my mate chased him numerous times in our old GTs

he obv stayed in front but he wasnt blitzing me like all the hype on the internet about them. couldnt help but laugh.

Isn't a Rally just the a weightless 106 with steeles?

1.3 8v 100bhp in the s1

lightened to fuck, even the carpets are lighter iirc. was after one a couple of years back when i turned 18, but decided against it in the end

So the S2 are the 1.6 16v yea?

I bet they are quick, going to check the BHP now...
