yes you are right but the build of 205s is terrable, i recall openning my door and the door pocket falling off, the lights failing when i came off full beam and my sterio blowing up for no reason

I know most hot hatches tend to be fairly flimsy and that you don't buy one purely with the intention of build quality, but the 205 GTi my bro had was ridiculously fragile.. to the point where I would not have been able to live with it!

Reliability aside, it was a great car and I respect them alot. Can't remember the last time I saw one on the road.

it wouldnt mean much, except it was repeated in different GTs and we knew him so we knew he was trying.

there are so many variables when you have a race with some one that all these 'i raced some one in a xxx and hammered it' kinda quote's are meaningless, no matter how many times you raced it. for starters you may be a better driver than him, you may have bigger balls than him, you may be more of an enthusiastic driver than him ect ect...

and how old was this car? probably getting on for what 17 years(?)

baring in mind this is the type of car that attracts people that like to thrash cars i'd say that's pretty good, old cars get problems that's just a fact of life, you can't tell me that non of the other cars you've had had any issues?...

my step dad had a few 205 gti's and a 309 gti and the only issue he ever had with them was the exhaust manifold cracked on one (apparently a common fault with them) and a gear box went on another, these things happen with older cars all the time, a life time of abuse will take its toll.

my sisters chap bought one of those MG ZR's when they came out, now that had shocking build quality, switches breaking, interior bits falling off in his hands and electrical stuff working as and when it wanted to. and that was on a brand new car

Pitching the 1.4 16v against the GTi/GT/VTS was unfair,when its matches were the Quicksilver/Sporting/VTR. But thats VW UK's fault for not importing the version of the 6n that belonged in the road test.

I dont care about that though - it was just nice to see a decent episode of Top Gear for a change.

16v's are group 10 mate, they're not exactly piss cheap to insure yet I still bought one as my first car.

I'm with Tris on this one. I bought a 16v when I could have had any of the cars in that list, and insured them. It all depends on what you buy a car for, and the 16v is not a hot hatch. It's a mildly warm hatch that gives you a few cheap thrills when you stick it above 4k rpm and feels faster than it is. But if some tool crashes into me because he's driving like a dick, then out of those cars listed, I'd rather have the polo because I have a better chance of walking away.

As for french build quality - I know what it's like - I used to own one. And I'll never own another.

I thought it was the case that a hot hatch "did everything???"

As in, its a car u can gently nip down to the shops in, without the fear that it will break down or fall apart on the way there, yet when you feel the urge, you can rag the balls off it.

If its the case where all you want in a car is that it handles like a go kart and you dont care about any other aspect of it, then why not buy a go kart n find a track?? maybe its just my personal view but if i had a car that handled brilliantly but was similair to a skatboard in terms of comfort, then it would drive me insane....

....However - each to thier own :-)

because you are buying the closest thing to a go kart for the roads (not every one wants to drive a go kart around a track), some people want the closest thing but that's road legal, and trust me it wouldn't be a polo

the cloesest thing to a go-kart imo is a classic mini, preferablly with an eaton supercharger like my mates. before he had an accident, wrote it off [not his fault, lorry was reversing wrong way up a country lane to retrieve some spillled load on a blind corner,damage didnt even look bad] and totally fucked his back up. he aint buyin another go-kart for the road like
