I have a 2004 1.4i Polo (9N) and my oil service light just came on now (like 1500KM's after the last service).

Will the above method(s) work on my car?

Works on my 2000 GTI, got to count to 10 at each stage!

Polo 96-99

IN01 -inspection service

Switch ignition ON

Press and hold button (A left) under speedo

Switch ignition OFF

Release button

Press and release button A (left)

The letter "IN01" will appear in the odometer display of the speedometer.

Press clock minute button B until "-----" appears in the display

Press button A (left) to display "OEL"

Press button B to display "-----"

Switch ignition on until the letters "IN00" appear in the display

I have instructions for Oil service (OEL) and IN02 inspection service if this doesn't work. :)

hi sorry to disturb you i followed your guide to resetting the service warning as i just had a full service including cambelt change, the odometer always prompted INO1 now I've got the OEL what should it be set to ? as i was messing around with the same steps after getting the OEL

I was able to bring up the following

OEL

INO1.S

IN02.S

it was something along the lines of what I've just put up above, thanks for your help

can anyone please help me as i know get OEL displayed i just want to set to the next appropriate setting so it comes up when the right warning should later on

done just have to hold the button for at least 10 seconds

1. reset odometer

2. press and hold button

3. switch on ignition

4. hold until --- is displayed

5. voila

this worked first time on my R reg 16v cheers

alos worked 4 me on my r reg 1.4 8v

'97 1L

With ignition on (Engine Off)

1. Select total Mileage by pressing the right button.

2. Hold right button down.

3. Turn ignition off

4. Wait ten seconds

5. Turn Ignition ON

6. Keep holding until --- is displayed (you will see stuff like 'INS' and 'OIL' then '---')

7. Done!

Okay, I have a 1997 MK4

I had the INSP02 light on

Took a read at the owners manual, It said:

Turn on the ignition - But do not start the engine.

Press and hold the milometer button (the larger one on the left of the cluster)

While holding, Remove the key, You are then faced with the 3 possible indicators,

These are OEL- Oil change needed

INSP01 - Annual Inspection/Service Needed

INSP02 - Annual Inspection/Service AND work needed.

Then to remove the indicator, select, by pressing the milometer button again and hold the minute change button.

This is the lower button next to the clock.

You are then showen "- - - - -"

This confirms the indicator has been wiped.

my service light has been on for weeks and its been getting on my nerves,

I've just tried this one at 1:30am after finding this forum and it works, i had to change it slightly,

i have a

1998 1L POLO

reset the miles button

insert the key and turn it once, just before the ignition

press & hold the miles reset button

turn ignition on whilst button still pressed

wait unitll the display goes ---

turn the ignition off then release the keys

that should sort it,

I reset the service indicator on my 05 polo, however it's come back on again after about 15k miles. I've read that this is the standard for the manual reset but I'm on long life oil so it should last much longer than this. If I reset it again manually does this mean that it will simply wait another 15k blindly or will the sensors think the oil is due a change kick in before that? I don't want to keep resetting it if the variable indicator isn't going to work.

IMO the oil should be changed after no longer than 15k (even on long life oil); the carbon build up will be killing the efficiency of the engine by that point, thus costing mpg. It’s a bit of a false economy. The other main reason for changing the oil more often is to reduce wear of the main moving components, such as big end shell bearings, and the piston rings, because of the build-up of deposits (such as swarf). I like an oil change at bang on every 5k, that way I know where I’m at, and at MOT time the emitions came back as 8 parts per million hydrocarbons, out of an allowable 200. :-)

Thats just my opinion on the whole oil service thing.

Thanks for the info, I'm planning on keeping this car until it dies so I'd like to keep it in good shape. I'll go for an oil change at 15k.

For MK5> change it with Vag-Com, Go into installation list, instruments, and then change one of the adaption channels to a 0 (will be a 1 IIRC) Easy!

this worked on my 2000 gti, will keep you posted if the light comes back on any time soon :)

When your car is serviced at a non-vw garage or at home by yourslef, the ecu doesnt know its had a service, so the service indicator stays on. To reset it:

-(with the ignition off and keys out) press and hold the mile reset button

-turn ignition on

-wait until the display goes like '--'

-turn ignition off and keys out and release button

viola :)

I've got a 99 1.4 16v, and I cant reset mine. I have found the trip reset also doesnt work. Is this the only way to reset it? and does anyone know if its a cheap fix for the buton if not

Sorry for uncovering an old thread but it is really annoying seeing the service INSP pop up every time you turn your engine on.

T reg polo 6n if any one is interested. Also, I did have a service but in a Mercedes garage not vw.

Just done this. Worked first time on my '99 1.0 :-) Despite the haynes saying it wouldnt work.
