at work so cba clicking on random links, the thread on the head and for your senders will be M10 x 1, so you need a t-piece that has 3, m10x1 fittings, one male, two female.

Fitting Bike Carbs in a mk3 So anyway. To the meat! What do I need? 1 x Mk1/2/3 Polo ENGINE 1 x 1.4 16v (AFH Engine Code) out of a Mk4 Polo 16v “Valver” Engine Mounting Plate GEARBOX, A

Hey guys. Rang VW about that G40 Oil T-Piece. They said something about a banjo fitting that comes in two separate parts. Works out as about 40 quid for the two. Does this sound right? I was g

  • Wrong topic. But those carbs are set up for a 1.6 8v and the manifold is for a Ford 1.3/1.4/1.6 CVH 8v engine. Carbs themselves would be fine for a 1.6 8v Polo.

No worries mate.

I found this:

But I'm not sure if the hex edges of the sender will foul on each other.

If they do... could i use an adapter as an extension by having both the male and female the same thread?

Something like this:

Oiladapter.jpg

Both these comes to about 12 quid as opposed to the 40 quid quoted by VW.

yep that looks like the one matey, i think you will be ok fitting both senders on without them hitting into each other.

just get some new copper washers for the head, and two senders and jobs a good un

i got my g40 bit 2nd hand for a tenner, but aye i wouldnt pay 40 quid for new un's

and yep if they do foul you can use an adaptor piece just to space it out a bit =]

Didnt even think of washers!

Thanks for the help Saf... the first of lots of AFH questions i think!

I did say there would be more questions!

The airbox on your carbs... is it the standard one but split open? If that makes sense?

All the CBR airboxes i find are massive sealed units... do they have the 4 filters inside this box and you just binned the top half of the box?

Cheers!

Marcus

in the process of building a 16v engine, in a mk2, well its a project so going to be a while off fitting it,i have a choice or either a valver box or gt 1 have enough to go at.which have people found to be better. not sure if i want top end or just short raito running. any advice.

Is it possible to just fit the valver engine in a mk3 without using bike carbs but just standard fueling system of the mk4?

  • 3 weeks later...

As I've just taken my engine out I thought I would take a picture of the starter motor that I used. Mine was from a late 1990 Mk2 Coupe S. Now I people have said that its just the very late Mk3 ones that fit and I don't know if this was every replaced by VW before our ownership but I know this was on the car when we had it in 1997.

Is it possible to just fit the valver engine in a mk3 without using bike carbs but just standard fueling system of the mk4?

yes it is possible

it's very straight forward tbh, it's just a case off stripping off any thing that you don't need from the mk4 loom and connecting the mk3 and mk4 fuse boxes together at the ignition, there are a few other wires to splice too (wire from mk4 fuse box to the mk3 fuel pump, wire from mk4 fuse box to mk3 rev counter to name just 2).

So with the engine conversion do you not have to change drive shafts of suspension? Brakes? Thanks

  • Author

driveshafts are the same if you use a mk2 or 3 4-5 speed box.

you dont need to change the suspension or brakes, but it is advised.

driving around a standard mk3 with an AFH lump in, would not be fun

Ok cool, I'm thinking about running 42 jenvey throttle bodies insted of bike carbs, just making sure.. I delete the ecu and don't need ma stand alone managment?

It's just the same as using bike carbs? Thanks

  • Author

you need management for ITB's, they are just butterflys with an injector and you need to control how much fuel is squirted and when!

Ok, so got a really simple question today.

Does anyone know the thread pitch and all those details for the inlet manifold bolts on this engine?

Went to GSF and they didnt have any. Guess you want an allen key head but dont know too much about pitches etc.

Also...

Where is everyone getting exhaust manifold gaskets... GSF said they couldnt get it? Would rather not get genuine VAG if i can help it, they already relieved me of loads of monies for my flywheel stretch bolts! Bastards!

  • Author

i got my exhaust gasket as part of a polo gti headgasket set (as i was building a hybrid) the afh headgasket set, contains the exhaust mani gasket.

I'm sure you can find an ebay seller for just the exhaust gasket!

M8 x 1.5 i think for the bolts, will have to check, mine are 6mm hex head

gsf wont sell the bolts mate, get onto ebay

also flywheel stretch bolts, surely they werent more than 2 quid each and theres only 6!

  • 5 weeks later...

Just wondering but why can't you use a 4 speed box?

  • Author

you can, but it would get tiresome quickly

  • 2 weeks later...

Cheers I thought you could, Personaly i like the 4 speed box better

You like it with a different engine. I assure you,you will not like it when its mated to a long-stroke 1.6.

  • Author

or the standard 1.4 afh. the best box i found out of the few i tried was the CEG, the AHD and AHZ were just too short!
