Fitting Bike Carbs in a mk3 So anyway. To the meat! What do I need? 1 x Mk1/2/3 Polo ENGINE 1 x 1.4 16v (AFH Engine Code) out of a Mk4 Polo 16v “Valver” Engine Mounting Plate GEARBOX, A

Hey guys. Rang VW about that G40 Oil T-Piece. They said something about a banjo fitting that comes in two separate parts. Works out as about 40 quid for the two. Does this sound right? I was g

  • Wrong topic. But those carbs are set up for a 1.6 8v and the manifold is for a Ford 1.3/1.4/1.6 CVH 8v engine. Carbs themselves would be fine for a 1.6 8v Polo.

I know the alternator pulley is diff, so people change to a mk4 alt pulley, why not run a mk3 crank pulley

yes , but the slightly different profile of the pulley catches on the AEE cambelt cover , not by much so it tends to rub on the cover , mine squealed like a bitch for about a week

I'm presuming you meant for the AEE , not sure if it applies to the AFH

I need to address the massive gap in the cambelt cover due to no mount there

How do you set up timing for dizzy? If any one can run through what they did would appriciate it! :-)

With a timing light mate.

You on carbs or injection?

Sorry should of been more clear. Bike carbs but your ment to get TDC and then set it back 6 degrees? But like 8 for carbs?

there should be two marks shouldnt there? one for TDC and one for -6

edit: my afh on carbs wouldnt run properly on -6 degrees, as kiz found out at santa pod when i kept stealing his allen keys

A mk2 dizzy just isn't right for a 1.4 16v on carb's anyway. 8-10deg base timing be ok I guess

according to the guy that bought it, hes swapped the dizzy around 180 degrees and its alot quicker!! jelous :(

Where is the mark -6 on the block by the crank?

well this is my 8v, should be similar id have thought? triangle bit on the left is the -6 and square bit on the right is tdc (ignore the timing, it was way out!)

There's usually a small slit in the aux pulley.

It's a good idea to mark it with a paint pen or something then wipe away the excess so just the small grove is highlighted.

You'll then see between the cambelt above crank pulley on the oil seal housing two lines, one is TDC, one is 6 deg before.

The one towards the back of car is the timing mark.

If you use a non adjustable timing light basically twist the dizzy until the line you marked lines up with the mark on the oil seal housing.

This is because the strobe flashes at TDC, meaning it highlights it at the right point.

Engine should be idling obviously, vac advanced disconnected

On the AFH lump the aux pulley has to come off as i cant see any markings on it and behind it is plastic casing so to remove the plastic casing you have to take off the pulley wasnt sure how to do it :-s

you dont have to take the pulley off, the lads timed mine up at santa pod with the pulley still on. i didnt have any engine covers though.

the plastic cover is just clipped on and the metal part is bolted on. easy to take off

You can do it in situ thats the whole idea

Markings on timing belt cover

Have just looked at the alternator situation...

So this is the Mk4 pulleys, with a Mk3 alt.

Alternator in these pics has the fan, the large washer and the Mk4 pulley (standard size)

Instead of cutting it down then spacing, I'm going to turn it down by 7.3mm, which should align it with the crank pulley appropriately..

Will report back when Iv machined it

I'm doing my alternator but have come to a stop so please help all i can offer in return is naughty pics of my self :-)

The belts gonna hit the antiroll bar mount how do i avoid this? Thanks

Go back like a page, you have to cut it to clear the belt

I f@€king love you right now x

Here's a diagram for the benefit of those that will do this in future:

Remember that if you use a Mk2/3 alternator and pulleys (V-belt ones) the belt location is likely to be further down the mount.

I love this picture. hahaha

It's been a while as all was going well until my diff decided to give up and is on the verge of going bang :( I used my original 1.3 5 speed box and will obviously be after a new one ASAP, was just wondering if there is a better box to use to avoid this? Gt box? G40 box? What's the best? I imagine g40 as it runs similar power but can it be fitted?

Cheers
