i bought a chainlink steering wheel the other day (yes, one that is like cheech and chong's in his car)

I'm going to put it onto my mk3 but my uncle said it is illegal, i searched Google and the likes but i couldn't find anything worth reading,

what the opinions?

that's what i though, unless the only reason being is that its really solid, you'll know if you crash!

i payed £60 off a friend, you can buy them off the net, i gotta get a boss for it though

i've just had a look on ebay but the only one i could find was in the us (although it came up on ebay uk), it said noting about legalities in the add, i'm guessing that if you were going to be shipping some thing to the uk that wasn't legal to use here they would have to say so in the add? (it was a company selling it btw, not just some randomer).

there isn't even a law on what steering wheel you can have, well within reason?

get some written statement from a mot centre ( "Friend" ) saying there perfectly legal and safe if you can, - would shut the self centered idiot up :)

How is it any "harder" than a normal wheel? They have about a couple of mm of rubber on them, get your mate to whack you round the head with each one - bet they both hurt

yer, i thought it may be slippy in the summer, being as its hot, hands getting sweaty and all that, just grip it even harder, it probablly has mroe grip than a standard one though!

and i know one cop, he tries to do me for everything, he pulls me all the time he sees me and trys saying I'm not wearing a seatbelt or my car is too low, but i always drive away with nothing, well apart from one time he heard me do charucca horn on the road, its for show use only..yea i was "showing my mate"

but also tbf if you hit someone round the head hard enough its gonna hurt

-would they be much more slippery than a varnished wood steering wheel? besides due to the unevenness of the chain wouldn't it give it more of a grippy surface?

as cool as that shifter looks it must be a right pain in the arse to use day to day, i can only imagine the throw you would get on a 2 foot long gear stick

Nope, the varnished wood would give a better grip because of the large contact area between your hand and the wheel, unless it was all sweaty...But that would also apply to the chain.

I've heard things about legalities and chain link wheels, if they are illegal i think its to do with the very un even surface (head contact is going to hurt more than a stock wheel) and somthing about getting fingers caught

i can see where your coming from with that point actually, would stop me from getting one though, besides if your waring a seat belt there shouldn't be an issue of head to wheel contact

my mate had one in his mk2 Jetta, you could see his hand from behind, when he hit 3rd gear he smacked his rear view mirror with his hand

cheers mate, been trying to get one for a while but no one seems to be able to get them off.

surely they can't be that hard? ill be buying the puller thing today, ill probably try it tomorrow, il let you know :)

a puller may work better than the hammer and screw driver method i tried to use

did it come off like that though?

i couldn't get one today from Halfrauds ill have to check when they stock up, hopefully this week, when my boss gets here :p
