ok, I started to fill the box with oil, look under neath only to see it pouring stright out onto the deck by the fly wheel.... anyone had this problem as i dont want to wreck my clutch and have to take everything back out. any help appreciated :)

where are you putting the oil in?

you need a 17mm hex bit to remove the plugs, I've used a wheel bolt in the past, or even better a locking wheel bolt adapter (slightly longer so easier to get a spanner on) When topped up the level of oil should be at the height of the bottom of the fill hole.

Its either that or the input shaft seal is buggered.

Cheers gaz I'm such an asshole thank god i only put a few ml in there. Thats the last time i use a haynes diagram, have u seen the drawing where it shows to put it in! well my clutch is still good so thank F**K I aint gotta pull it all back out. what is that hole for then? Its EXTREMLY misleading. with the mechanical knowledge i have ud think i could get something this simple right. ill post a video up tommorow now as times gettin on now. goes damn well though, and the extra cog is godly.

lol yea luckily i got away with not having to need a new clutch, which i guess others arnt so lucky with. Great inspection hole though, u can see everything through there THIS SHOULD BE A TOPPED FAQ

yeah I've heard that before too, They must use the dowels on the flywheel or something. seems like an odd way of doing it to me!

lesson learnt ...dont do this. all i can say is slippy slippidy dooo yay yet another few hours of my life suckubused from the polo

i used that hole to lock the con rod on my gt so i could remove the lower pulley

what r the 3 bolt things on the front of the box? (if you no what i mean) thay r in a line(thay r like 1's you wood fill up the box from.. the top to fill middel 1 for the level and last one for emptying it)..not shore if this is right but thought i wood just ask and find out...

They probably hold some of the interals to the gearbox casing. I wouldnt touch anything execpt for the two bolts in the picture when it comes to filling and emptying the gearbox with oil.

how long will it take to burn off? should i drive around town for an hour or something till it heats off? rather than let it soak into the clutch?

Hello All, i've got a 2001 Polo 1.4 Auto, i know that the transmission units filled 'for life', but i want to

renew the oil and gearbox filter, are the drain and fill points the same for this model's year, the haynes

manual dosn't give many details about this Polo's auto unit, or how to do this, but they mention somthing about measuring the oil temp, i don't understand, can i do it?, or is it a definite job only for a VW garage, and not an independant garage.

If anyones got a set of service manual instructions on how to go about this, i'd give it a go myself.

Hi there i need real big help, i dropped the oil out of the gearbox from a large bout about 22mm the otherside of the drain hole, i dont have a filler hole in the same place as the picture you have showed me, there is a allen key hole that looks like hat on the front of the gearbox would this be it any help would be gratefull thanks

If the inspection cap was missing would oil come out of here. Only mine is missing and I've noticed oil on the underside of the coolant hose directly above it.

Will have a look there, but its not engine oil that leaking as the stuff is that clear and thin that at first I thought it was water but it does have a slight oily consistency when you rub it between your fingers. So I'm lost at where the stuffs coming from. Any other ideas

late reply but gearbox oil is really thick. Much thicker than engine oil. The 5-speeds take about 3.1 litres.

if you level plugs on the front its a later box no panic just fill till it trickles out then put the plug back in job done

The inspection hole on the top of the box is to set up the timing and get the crank on TDC. There is a mark on the flywheel which lines up with a casting on the housing. You need to remove the complete plastic bung to see it not just the pull out centre part.
