ok so i and polishing some lips on some rims so i went down to halfords got my 400 to 1200 sandpaper n then i asked a guy at halfords which metal polish was the best autosol or autoglym polish, he asked what for so i explained the steps of sand paper etc, then said i need something to give it a good shine, he said "there is no way you can polish rims this way, it simply will not work what you need is this" and produced some chrome paint i laughed and said "i have seen it done" and he said "no you haven't" so i just laughed, thanked him for his time and went to checkout with some autosol as its proven to work so any one any idea which is best? autosol or autoglym???

neither. megiuars metal wax is the best stuff. autosol is good for cleaning up tarnished metal

i swear by autosol..... has worked wonders for me for years

it certainly does work lol... i'll get some photos up in a minute of what happened when i attacked my teardrops with 240-1500 grit, and then a layer of magical autosol...

autosol is good at cleaning, but it doesnt do much to protect the finish, hence why i use megs, which leaves a waxy finish behind to protect the polished metal

came up better than in the pics after another 2 scrubs of autosol

make sure you show the guy at halfords your finish and laugh at him!

well heres what you can do with a polishing kit (i.e. mops and compounds) and a bit of megiuars metal polish

Autosol is the daddy, but dont use it to much on the likes of chome as it will eat the layers off it over time.

but it will make tired metal look 90% new.

Ye but this is a first time polish rather than maintenance so I'd say autosol - then megs next time.

I'm thinking about going further than 1200 grit maybe 1400/1500 anyone know where i can get the finer stuff in a shop so i aint waiting for the posty? also could i use autosol to polish it up and then megs stuff to further polish and protect? or would the megs not make a difference to the finish? cheers

I used autosol for when i refurbished my alleycats.

The stuff works wonders i think. and for protection after polishing i find Poor boys wheel sealant works well on the M3's rims and on other polished rims :)

pepe you can get 1500 in halfords... right next to 1200 lol.

as long as theyve got it in stock anyway, I've only seen it at keefley a couple times.

they always have it(1500) at Bradford frauds but I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Keighley, but if they dont have it, try BnQ + Wilco etc.

Autosol is the only thing that was used on my wheel, apart from obviously the sandpaper.

From experience Autosol is good as an initial polish, but it is quite coarse. Good for removing blemishes, I find autosol then using Brasso to be best on polished surfaces.

it is a bit pricey, but it does last ages. had my pot for 18months and there is still 3/4s left.

its true that there are probably better/cheaper alternatives, but most of them have to be ordered via the net, which can sometimes be a pain if you need the stuff straight away

i think the megs stuff will be a later purchase tbh lol i went down to halfords and it 8.99 for the tub lol the label says £63 a litre haha the had just restocked the sandpaper section and i got some 1500 lol so ill be finishing one rim off and ill post a pic up later on

oh and also i was talking to my old man and he said back in the day they used to use clear bees wax on mini rims etc, i thought i would be a bit messy but he said he used to do them and then put em infront of the fire over night and it would all melt smooth and then cool down and eventually dry up? anyone done this?? i have some pure beeswax (footlocker special haha)

ok here you go! this is the first time I've ever polished something i will be doing more when i can get some finer paper than 1500, and also i have 3 more wheels to do its time consuming, but fun! lol

the wheel is abit wet as i washed all the crap off the tyres so it better than it looks, also the channel that just rough primer etc will be getting a lick of paint maybe fluroescent???
