All depends on your individual tastes on cars for us to point you in the right direction.

If you want something to tinker and learn about mechanics, a mk2 or 3 will be good.

Look at a mk4 if you're after gizmos (electric windows, PAS, ABS etc)

Dont get a polo at this time of year lol... i did and have spent the last two days in snow/ice/bloody-freezing-coldness obsessing over the thing. Get one in the summer when you can have beers and do it in shorts
