classic?

meh. there are 5000 of them iirc.

they have all be used to keep others alive, and tbh the g60 is a shit engine in something as heavy as a rallye. the vr rallye he built flew and sounded immnese... one mans "fucking up" is another man's "improving" altho i did have a go when he used a minter with full leathers as a work van... :-(

would LOVE a r32 turbo'd rallye...

and you NEED to see those cars, beautiful.

Be good to get one of them, slam it and put some decent power through it :). 4x4 drivetrain...

tbh the drivetrain probably couldnt cope with much power , and good luck getting new parts to replace the bust ones

awesome things these , gotta say id never own one though , a dub thats high just aint right !

those countrys are rare as fuck-even in germany.about 10 years ago you were able to spot one of these golfs from time to time.

yeah normal mk2 golf synchros are about, some with just 1.8 engines in. Then there's also a g60 synchro. Fairly rare but no where near as rare as golf countrys

Nearly brought a normal golf synchro afew years back. Looked good, decent amount of history, low miles, cheap........and then bid on a polo GT which was fooked :( (luckily I didn't win it :) )

Wish I got it now.

Yeah apparently the bevel drive on the back of the gearbox explodes and then you are up shit creek.

I wonder if you were to take off the propshaft, if they'd handle any better than a normal Mk2, seeing as they have IRS... I'm talking about the normal Syncro rather than the Country.

Has anyone noticed how ridiculously ugly these countrys are???

Novelty is very powerful, and it makes me blind to the countrys ugliness.

Functional ugly though - brilliant in my view!

yep, the only synchro gear strong enough for any sort of power is rallye stuff.

other than that its hadlex.

Engine's the wrong way round for most of that stuff though.

No it isn't :)

Audi TT, S3, etc all run Haldex rear diffs and the engine is the right way round in them. At the front end, it's just a gearbox swap (maybe a mount too), but for the rear there's a fair bit of work with a custom propshaft needed and driveshafts too IIRC.

S4s with the longitudinal lumps run a Torsen setup, rather than Haldex.

nope! but that one looks sick!

my mate likes his VR6 rallye

the G60 engine is pretty weak tbh, would i be right in thinking that the rallye was VW's answer to the Escort Cosworth?

if so that's a pretty big fail...

they were out a few years before the cossie. they were intended for rallying, but by the time they were ready, the rules changed, and so never won owt

in rally trim they were producing 600hp iirc?

the road spec g60's are poo.

the were for group B but it ceased to exist after they did one event.

oh right, so any one buying a road going rallye off the back of the rally car would be gutted when they tried to put their foot down

yeah.

this was back in the day of mentalist group B remember, they didnt exactly have to pass emissions...

check the orange open-air! 8-)

Ah right, still on the learning curve a little with all that.... want to quattro something up but don't think I'll be allowed.

This was probably VAG's answer to a new Escort Cossie, although more aimed at the performance BMW's and Mercs.

I don't think there really is a VW equivalent of an escort cosworth, the idea of the Rallye prob comes the closest but the actual car doesn't compete.

The g60 engine in a rallye is smaller capacity than a normal g60 engine so it could compete in certain classes of motorsport where the engine multiplier for a forced induction engine would keep it under a limit of 3 litres.
