I have a R reg 1.4,16v polo and it looks like my starter motor might be on its way out(screechs on turn of key).The advice I need is will any starter motor from an R reg work on mine?which is the simple way of replacing the starter motor not the quickest(my patience doesnt like being tested :)Any help would really be apreciated

I know the starter motor on an 8V is in a lame position, right underneath the inlet manifold. I assume it is in the same position on a 16V..

Working from any direction is going to be awkward if you don't remove the inlet manifold. But this to me seems needless effort in itself, I would much rather get underneath the car and attack the starter motor from there. Not sure how easily it can be removed from that position though, never really tried it myself but those are your options I suppose.
